Wheel selection help

2005 R53 S. All. I am sure this has been discussed many times but looking for some advice based on my use and set up. I use the car strictly for autox in the Stx class. Mods are
koni yellows
front camber plates
wheel studs conversion
rear adjustable control arms

car is on stock springs not lowered. I currently have stock 17x7 wheels and 215/45/17 sticky tires. Like to stay on same size tire as readialy available.
So finally my questiion: looking for light weight wheel advice, offset without modifications. This stock wheels are 45 offset I think

thanks in advance

Go to tirerack and put in your model and look at 17" wheels noting offsets and wheel weights.

Some budget wheels are well priced and are good on weight compared to OEM wheels.

Forged super light wheels are great except for the price so look at your budget.

What tires are you running in STX?

215/45-17 is a good size for tire selection but there are other options, 205/40, 205/45, 215/40 and 235 tire sizes are all possible. 17x7" rims are best for 205-215mm wide tires but you can mount wider sizes if you have clearance.

Smaller tire diameter is good for lowered gearing on courses that have tight turns and not much above 60 mph, how much do you use first gear is it tall or do you quickly move to second? Power lagging at lower rpms? then small tire diameter might help.

You should also have an adjustable rear swaybar.

mot many minis racing these days the miatas have the preference. Tires are Falken 615. Next set will be Re71’s. I do have a Alta adjustable rear bar just forgot to mention.

Thanks

OK, Falken 615 not the best autocross tire even if they cost you less. Bridgestone RE71R is a much better choice. How old are the Falken's?

For wheels at tirerack there are lots of filters you can choose for finish, sizes, weights etc.

For under 16 lbs and on a budget

Kosei K1TS 17x7" et42 light grey painted 15 lbs each $175 special closeout, hard to beat this
Advanti DST Storm S1 17 $185 to 199 each, Black, hyper silver or metallic bronze, 17x7 with et 35 to 40 (14 lbs) or 17x8 et35-45 (16.7-17.5 lbs)
Enkei Racing RPF1 $229 each, 17x7 et43, 14.6 lbs, bright silver painted

with 17x8 wheel you can use 245/40-17 $168 each, fits 8-9.5" wide rim, perfect for 8.5" rim, 1-2 lbs heavier but more contact patch, 24.7" tire diameter

215/45-17 $142 each, fits rims 7-8" wide, 24.7" tire diam. 22 lbs

If you weren't needing 17" sizes then another option is-

16x7 or 16x8 wheel

205/45-16 RE71R $154 each, fits wheels 6.5-7.5" wide, perfect for 7" rim, 19 lbs, 23.2" tire diameter for lowered gearing

Tirerack wheels (assuming they fit over front brake calipers - not JCW)
TRMotorsport C1 $144 each, 16x7 et42, light grey painted, 15.2 lbs
Enkei Racing
PF01 $216 each, 16x7 et43, 14 lbs, bright silver
RPF1 $221 each, 16x7 et43, 13.7 lbs, bright silver

Thanks that is a wealth of information. And much appreciate. The Falkens are about 8 races old so getting down there. Just rotated. The plan is new wheels and some Re71s. Want to stay with 17. Most I am worried about is offset and rubbing with -2.5 camber

If you have OEM suspension then -2.5 camber is not going to be that much concern. look at your current clearance and any areas that might be close.

Tire diameter is important when you run anything taller than OEM 24.3" but also related to wider tire sizes and wheel widths. 17x7 is safe and up to 215mm is OK.

Less camber usually causes reduced clearance especially in front.

8 races is not much, monitor the tires for wear and look for sales, tirerack has $70 credit card offer on set of four bridgestone tires now. You can even ask around and see if anyone will buy your used tires so that you can make the switch sooner.

What did you think of the Falkens? I can tell you that with RE71R I can overlap race times with track prepped cars on race slicks. They are soft rubber and can heat cycle and get hard with use.

I have stock springs for the class. But run camber plates and rear adjustable control arms. The Falkens are above average and on hot days have to be sprayed down to cool them off. They had some crazy sale at Tire Rack so couldn’t pass up.
