Hi Dan,
I'm thinking of ordering the newly available 16" R90 wheels as an accessory item. They run around $775.00 a set (for a one piece wheel.) (Good Price compared to the 17&quot I can order my S with 16" tires and the dealer would mount the R90's on the stock 16" all season runflats. I will probably sell the 16" wheels that come standard. What is your opinion on this? I read from numerous posts that 16" wheels and tires are faster off the line and the Mini handles better. The only disadvantage I can see is appearance wise, the 17" would fill out the fenders better. Please give me your personal opinion. Also the 16" runflats are only available in all season tread not performance.

The 16's are lighter and when matched with regular tires (non run-flat), you can save even more. I am running the 16" v-spokes with the Yokohama AVS ES100 tires. Without even trying very hard, that saved 13 lbs per corner which makes a noticable change in how the car accellerates, and handles, plus the ride comfort is better. Also, the replacement cost of the tires is less. Run-Flats are anywhere from $174 to $271 each. Where my Yokohama AVS ES100 tires are about $75 each in the 16" size.

The only thing I don't like about the 16" R90's is that they don't appear to have all the little socket head cap screws that the 17" version does (the screws that hold the two halfs together). Are the 16" version 1-piece?

Yes, the 16" R90's are one piece construction. That's why they don't have the rivets like the 17" R90's. Thanks for the reply and info on your 16" wheels and tires. Motor On!

Interesting that they are not offering these 16" as 2-piece as they are almost identical to the 2-piece 16" BBS that came on those special edition Wolfsburg Jettas in 2001.

Here is a pic of the 16" Wolfie wheels on my 2001.5 GTI. Pic is not great, but you can see the little bolts holding the wheels together.

One note: for anyone with these 2-peice wheels, NEVER EVER EVER attempt to remove these bolts for any reason. the MUST only be removed by BBS when repairing the wheels. If you bend one and want to repair them, BBS will NOT even touch them if they have a single tool mark on the bolts indicating that you have attempted this yourself.

Refer to my signature quotation to find out how I know this
