Tires (for 2006 base MC)

So I am looking at new tires, and I see there are a lot more options now... I don't need straight up performance, I am not doing autocross... and I also do use the tires all year (no room to store winters, please do not criticize me!). Have been running the Continental CONTIPROCONTACT 175/65R15...

Tirerack was suggesting Genral ALTIMAX RT43s. Anyone have experience with these? Or other suggestions? Not trying to be cheap... just wondering if there was any better options to the Contis I had been running.

Thanks!

In that thread the OP was looking at tires within a lower budget.

How much do you want to spend on four tires, mounted and balanced?

The ContiProContact (Grand Touring All Season tire) is not bad.
175/65-15 $96 each, 400 treadwear, 16 lbs
or 185/65-15 $89.47 each, 500 treadwear, 16 lbs, 24.5" tire diameter (will fit)

Within Grand Touring All Season tire class the best is-
Michelin Premier A/S
195/60-15 $122 each, 640 treadwear, 18 lbs, 24.2" tire diameter. This size is wider than OEM and has a shorter sidewall which is stiffer than OEM for better handling. Wider tread contact patch means better handling and cornering but also more rolling resistance than the same tire in a narrow size.

For those looking for a runflat for a 15" wheel, check out Bridgestone Driveguard in 195/60-15 for about $99 each on special at tirerack.com now. Runflats will be firmer riding than any non runflat but give you the safety of not having to fix a flat in traffic or in bad weather.

In General, Grand Touring All Season tires give good ride comfort and lower noise, longer treadwear, and good enough handling with low rolling resistance for more mpg. They are easy to live with but aren't a good choice for ultimate grip and crisp sharp cornering and they are better suited for light snow when used in the winter. Prices vary.

If you are not out for tops in handling but still want a good riding all season tire then look at High Performance All Season tire class.

Kumho PA31 175/65-15 $63 each, 18 lbs, 500 treadwear
Goodyear Eagle Sport AS 195/60-15 $81.41 each, 17 lbs, 24.2" tire diameter
