Moon Wheels

I am looking for a set of wheels? hubcaps? to go over a set of steel wheels? that are called moon wheels. They look like the ones on the old VW's. Has anyone put these on their MINI'S? I saw some pics with them on and it gave the car a real neat retro look......I mean it really changed the entire appearance of the car. Any info or pics if you have these would be great! Thanks......

Cool!!! I saw a MINI ad once that allowed you to switch out a variety of wheels and these "moon wheels" were one of the options. You're right, it totally changed the look of the car. Good luck with your quest! (...and keep us posted!)

I was looking for those last winter to go on my winter wheels but no luck. Nothing on line and all the auto parts stores carry are tacky bling bling hubcaps with fake disc brakes on them. I'm gonna check out an old hubcap shop I saw near here.

Would it be possible to order a set of the MINI steel wheels used on MINI ONEs and then find an appropriate hubcap? My recollection is that ONEs use a full wheel cover, so that might not really be the look you're going for.

My local MINI dealer sold the MINI One hubcaps for their winter steels last year. They look like cheap plastic and I don't think anyone would find them very "cool"

Weld Engineering makes them for sprint cars. Here's an example at Speedway Motors. More, and more. the last at J.C. Whitney.

moon hubcaps

OK, I've found steel wheels, and I've found moon hub caps, but never at the same place. No one so far can guarantee that the caps I find will fit the wheels they sell me.

Does anyone know where I can get the wheels and hubcaps at the same place?

Thank!!

Has anyone done this yet? I'm tempted, but at $32 a piece for the real deal mooneyes spun aluminum ones for 15" wheels, I'm not positive.

This was at SEMA. Not sure if thats some sort of painted disc or a retro custom wheel but cool none the less. Maybe you can just buy one disc and try it out

Well, I called Stockton Wheels, where these were listed and they don't come in our bolt pattern. Dangit!! Anybody else know where these might be available?

Stockton Wheel is probably your best bet, but you're looking at having custom wheels made. I talked to them years ago at a street rod show about getting a set of steelies for my (then) Honda Civic that would accept a set of 8" old Ford hubcaps (you'll need the same thing for a set of baby moons). They said they could put together a set of four-lug wheels using old six-cylinder Mustang centers. The problem is that the bolt pattern on the Civic was 4x100mm, same as with the MINI. They said that if it was the 4x110mm pattern that the Accords used, then the non-metric Mustang pattern matches up. Doesn't match up with the 4x100. It's possible that you could have those wheels made up, and get some 4x100 - 4x110 wheel adapters (might have to have those custom made by a machine shop).

Unfortunately, the cars that are going to have steel wheels with a 4x100 bolt pattern are going to be old Japanese and possibly European cars, and they tend to have centers that have ventilating holes in them - they went to disc brakes sooner than American cars did. Also, the steel wheels that are available for newer foreign cars tend to be designed with centers that don't accept hubcaps. Also, it seems that until recently, most smaller cars were using 13" and 14" wheels, especially the lower line models that would use steel wheels. If you see a four-lug car running a 15" steelie (or alloy, for that matter), it's probably got the larger 4x100 pattern.

You might also check with Tire Rack. They do snowtire sets, and they *might* know of a wheel that would work.

I'd like the same thing, myself, actually, as I'd love to have a set of chrome wheels with '50 Mercury caps and wide whites to put on my MINI when I go to rod shows.

I have had a set of steelies for dedicated winter tires since fall of 06 for a a 2005 coupe. traded that car for an 09 clubman and have maintained the steelies for my snow needs. from the very start, I wanted a more refined look than the bare tirerack rims, do I searched and picked up a set of 4 chromed smoothie caps from hubcapmike.com
look under "vintage caps" and smoothies by size. they were about $100 delivered. the weight and quality of these moon caps was pretty good, and they mount to the tire rack rims well. but after a few seasons in salt belt weather, the plating pitted and grew rust.
this past fall, I ordered a set of hubcap mike's pop on racing disc wheel covers. these are made of stainless steel, so no plating failure will occur. no rust either. the pop on spring mounts are really good quality. these caps sit proud of the rim and completely cover the air filler stem. it is a startling look. i think it complements my PW clubman really well. got a compliment from a gas station attendant who said they made the car look like it was hovering!

To do it right you'll need hub adapters to adapt new vintage wheels they are selling for hot rods and such then you could get the hub caps and trim rings to fit the wheels. And the proper wide white walls Coker Tires would be a good start
