When do run flats need replacing

I just ordered the MCCabrio. I'm not sure to go with 16" runflat, or normal 15". I thought I could get the 16" RF's, then replace them with normal tires once they wear out. Anyone have an idea when that is? I have gotten mixed answers from mini. Any recommendations would be helpful. While I'm at it... am I just crazy for ordering astro balck? It's supposed to be super metalic, and I am hoping it won't show as much dirt and scratches as a flat black color. Again, ideas and recomendations are welcome.

I have the Pirelli Eufori@ runflats, and rotate them every 4,000 miles. The damn things just won't wear out. I have approx. 20,000 miles on them and they look like they have half of their life still to go, seriously. I'd go for the normal non-runflats on your MC cabrio, you get a spare and a more comfortable ride.

You get a spare as in a spare tire? Where does that fit in the mini exactly, my runflats just got a hole in them... there is really no need to get runflats, nothing special. Still had to get it towed and get it patched... no spare.

It'll really depend on how you drive. I have 17" runflat Pirelli Euforios (sp?), and they were down to wear bars by 18K miles. Of course, I do like to drive rather hard...

You're discussing different cars and different tires.

The MC cabiro miniwifey mentions is a cooper so wheels are either 15" non runflats or 16" Dunlop runflats (usually last about 20,000 to 23,000 miles with rotation but it varies). The non runflats are usually continental tires in 175/65-15 size which don't last as long- about 20,000 miles or so. If you rotate tires and keep air pressure up it will be fine. The runflats do give you added safety in not needing to fix a flat in the middle of the night or on a dangerous road like a busy highway, just drive home or to a safe place.

Lilolecar mentions the 17" runflats but those are for the Cooper S. If driven hard they usually last about 14,000 to 20,000 miles. Depends on rotation, etc.

The spare tire is under the rear boot of the Cooper only, not the cooper S and is standard whether you order non runflats or runflats. It is a compact spare.

I've got an MCS and my first set of 16" runflats were replaced at 22,000 miles. I kept the pressure at around 35 psi and I rotated every 5000 miles. I had also used them one weekend on the track, which probably reduced life by a couple thousand miles...

They still had some wear in them but since I like to drive hard in the twisties the outside edges were going bald... I needed to replace them if I wanted to get in some more 'fun' driving. I had also noticed reduced traction on the freeways which made me a little nervous.

I replaced them with exactly the same tire - Dunlop Sport 5000 - because I got a really good deal on them. My next set will be non-runflats with more 'stickyness', probably Yokos.

Thanks everyone:smile: Since it was a $400 upgrade to the Sport package (I already had the seats and some other items), I decided to go for the run flats. I figure I want the 16" look anyways, and if I don't like the RF's, I'll replace them when they need it. Alot of people tell me not to, but I'm still going for Astro black - it's timeless, and I like that.

My Euphori@s lasted 27k miles in the front with no rotating (probably 25k when they hit the wear bars ). The rears are half worn down so I just had to replace the fronts. Next time, they will all need changing and I'll go with some P-Zero's.

I got about 34,000 out of my goodyear runflats. I didn't think that was to bad.
