Nitrogen in your tires?
Not if you have a compressor in your garage or put a few coins in the air machine at many of the 'quick-stop' markets.
I was more thinking about times when you went back to the dealer. A nice excuse for another line item on your service bill...
In that case, stop in any tire shop and ask them for four black caps. They probably won't even charge you for them.
stand by
here comes the post that says
I bought it and it is great because:
wait for it ...... here it comes ......
******
excuse me ... some place LOOKS at the caps and notes the color??????
you are using a different garage than me.

actually you should fill them with helium so your car will weigh less . . .
my son the chemical engineer cracks up when he sees a place selling nitrogen tire fills . . .
next thing you know people will pay several dollars for a bottle of WATER
p.s.unless the tire is purged of ALL AIR b4 the pure nitrogen is introduced ... a vacuum .. then all that is happening is the normal nitrogen concentration is being increased but there are STILL the other gasses and water vapor present . . .

I spot suckers in traffic by the green caps on their tires.
It wouldn't surprise me if these tanks of "Nitrogen" the tire shop or car dealer is using to inflate your tires is just compressed air. Who would know the difference?

We have a nitrogen machine at school and I teach all the benefits mentioned above, that said since I have access to and free use of the machine, I keep N2 in my tires.
And no, I can't tell any difference in how it drives, brakes or anything else.
If it's $99 on every invoice, it's is a money grab, pure and simple...but those N2 machines ARE frickin expensive.....
But hey Coca Cola made more money on not adding syrup last year than it did adding it - lots of people like to buy bottled water......
Lots of people are gonna love having nitrogen in the tires.
Probably just as many as think they have to change their oil every 3K.

I work at a tire dealer and we offer Nitrogen for $5 a tire. So $99 is highway robbery. We don't have a nitrogen machine, we just buy the cylinders from the local welding gas company. For the average driver only benefit is the nitrogen not leaking out as fast as compressed air.
I only use a special custom gas mix for inflating tyres of 79% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% argon. It can be purchased under the abbreviated name of 'air'.
Man, you can really feel the good that the 1% of argon does - you wouldn't catch me using that cheapskate plain nitrogen fill......

It's one this if someone asks to have the dealership put N2 in their tires for some reason......but when a dealer or shop sticks a $99 charge on EVERY car that goes through their shop for N2 in their tires....it's pure robbery.
The real reason that NASCAR uses N2, is because that's what they use to run the impact guns on pit stops. It's there, it's handy, it's probably free... I'm sure they have a deal with one of the gas suppliers. AirGas or someone.
If they were that concerned with temp pressure changes, then they would allow teams to install a pressure relief valve in the wheels. Instead, they won't let them do that, so the cars leave with 20-22-22.5psi and rely on heat to increase the pressure to useable levels.
There was a team that got caught cheating. They had micro holes drilled in the wheels that acted like pressure reliefs, They just started off with 48psi and it stayed there. The problem was that during cautions or a red flag, the tires went almost flat...

a new twist
I bought a car several years ago with nitrogen filled tires. There was not an additional charge for this. I was told by the dealership they only used nitrogen so the air sensors would not send a false low tire pressure indicator during cold weather. Funny thing is the tire sensor constantly gave false low pressure warnings.
Rubbish. From the gas laws, pressure in a sealed system is proportional to absolute temperature, i.e. degrees Kelvin (K) above absolute zero. If your tyre temperature goes from 300K (warm day) to 350K (not hot enough to boil water, but uncomfortable to touch) then the pressure increases by at least 16% (350/300), no matter what gas you use.
The advantage of DRY nitrogen is the DRY part, not the nitrogen part. If you used dry air with the water removed it would be just the same as far as pressure changes with temperature are concerned. They even state that here on the nitrogen webpage.

And the commentators still insist they have carbs not throttle bodies.
Costco had the machine to removed moisture/ condensation from the air and its FREE, some people call it Nitrogen but its not, for me it works though and last a year or so without having to add air every fill up.

If you had to add air on every fill up, you have problem my friend. :-)

That's why I work for the government.
