Hello all,

I have a 2013 Cooper S coming and it'll be here right during the Tahoe snow season which means chains. The 2012 manual indicates that chains should only be used for wheel sizes up to 16", but my Mini is coming with 17" wheels.

I know Thule makes a couple low profile chains like the Thule K-Summit and there is that Spikes Spider company that also uses low profile chains.

Has anyone used any of these? Did they fit ok? Are there any others that might fit as well?

 

This doesn't exactly translate to the Mini, but I've installed cables (alternative to chains) on an Accord. which worked just as well. So I went out n bought a set of cables for my Mini. Haven't used them yet tho, but I they are adjustable and fit many tire sizes. As with most chains and cables, they are dependent on your tire size, just check the box when you get some.

Chains, cables, both are still difficult to put on. Chains are just heavier and might make the install a bit tougher.

oh and when removing the cables, make sure to put them away as you unpacked them otherwise they get tangled

I have heard stories of them ONLY allowing 4 wheel drives WITH chains when the snow gets heavy enough though.

I am not sure if chains will work that well or if I would feel comfortable using them on a MINI with the chance of throwing one against the car and damaging it horribly...but then again I have only used chains once.

 

I suppose I could put 16" snow tires on it and then have more room for normal-sized chains for the winter.
