02 MCS 17 inch tire question

Are the stock 17 inch tires on the MCS all seasons? Can they be driven in the winter?

17 inch wheels were an option and different tires could be ordered. (performance and all season)

it is VERY unlikely that an 02 MCS has the factory tires on it today. 17" tires on an 02 MINI were usually performance tires and to get 25,000 miles out of them was RARE. even the all seasons did hang out much longer and most folks tore 'em up WAY b4 my numbers.

I'd recommend you go to the tires forums and ask about what tires you actually find on your car . . .

and

CAN vs SHOULD .... different questions.

I drove p'relli RF's on an 02S in snow ... not MUCH snow and not very often ... I would not recommend it. But I didn't buy snow tires for an address that saw snow an avergage of 4 days a year . . . heck, I COULD just call in sick those days.

safest to look at what you are getting. 17" will be able to take summer or all season tires. IIRC most run flats are all season. Keep in mind that many tires marked all season are crap in snow.

Thanks guys, I'll take a look at the tires to see what they are when I pick up the car. I know they are 17 inch run flat pirellie tires but dont know if they are AS or not.

One last question, must any new tires I put on be run flats?

Im asking because Im thinking for winter I will buy some steel rims and winter tires for the car.

No they dont have to be R.F.'s at all...get some good performance tires for your 17s then do the steelies (15's) for winter.

Only thing you probably wont do is transfer the TPMS to the winter wheels...unless you purchase new ones which can be about 200 bucks. Youd just have the idiot light on all winter.

But you can run all-season R.F.s in winter. I did. It wasnt that fun as they are hard as rocks. Mine were just brand spanking new so it helped

Easy answer no.

The cars are typically sold with RFs because "there is no spoon" um I mean spare -tire that is.

as a result they put on run flats and give you that fancy pressure system to make sure you know when you are flat.

getting a can of tire sealer and making sure you do have a jack and perhaps a road service like AAA should be fine.

If you are not going to drive uber sporty and can handle the harsh ride that the wicked stiff side walls on run flats provide you should be ok with them until they expire and you can replace with the standard AS tires of your choice.
