Downsizing wheels?

Hi All,
I'm currently running Enkei GF1s at 17x7. I'm thinking of going back to 16s in a year or so. What are the benefits/drawbacks? Can I go as small as 15? If I can get 15s I might really dig a set of R81 pepperpot wheels...

I'm noticing tires are cheaper in the smaller sizes. Also, the decreased diameter theoretically will increase performance/mpgs. Will this technically lower my ride height? Additionally, since I switched my suspension to an R53 SS+ the visible wheel gap has increased. I think on smaller rims it will be an even bigger gap, correct? Also, what's the deal with contact patch on something with smaller width (like the R81)? Will it affect traction adversely?

I guess I just need a quick 101 class on wheels! Thanks!

Many people like the look of the large diameter wheels so they go with those. I went with 17" due to the large BBK rotors.

The advantages of smaller wheel diameter are:
1. potentially lighter giving better "power" and handling. Lighter is always better here.
2. lots of choices of tires in 16" size
3. Prices are cheaper (as you mentioned)

You could go with a 205/50/16 to keep the circumfrance of the 17" or go with 205/55/16 as a plus 0 wheel upgrade.

The 15's ahould fit on a r53 as long as you don't have a bbk...big brake kit. I run 15's for winter...nice a light...gives the car a playful feel....if you keep the same outer diameter of the tire...it will fill in the wheel well the same...

Technically its all beneficial. The only drawback is looks, and obviously like others said brake fitment, but on an 06 no worries

The taller the sidewall, the more it can absorb bumps, so the smoother the ride.

The lighter the wheel/tire combination, the better the ride, faster acceleration, quicker braking, better mpg. These effects may be subtle.

Only downside of going to a smaller wheel would be the possibility of less responsive turn-in. This will vary with tire choice.
