drivers rear tire scraping
drivers rear tire scraping
Hi . I changed from run flat tires to standard tires and now have the tire scraping on drivers rear when i go over a bump . other than going back to run flats what can i do to the rear to stop this condition?
Please post the size of your original tires and the new tires and if you have the OEM mudflaps installed and if the suspension is lowered. If you changed wheels, see if you can get the offset of the new wheels.
I've gone through several tire sizes, mostly non runflats so I can offer some help.

If the tire diameter stayed the same as the runflats, then you must have a suspension issue. Check the location of the tire, compared to the otherside...is it centered? If the wheel is not properly centered, then it will rub, like you are having, on one side, but not the other. There are a few posts about this issue. Basicly, some suspension parts can be bent out of wack, front to back by potholes, causing this problem, and the car will still handle ok.
If you have a nonstandard/oversized tire, then there are other options as stated above.

thanks guys I have an 2004 mini, no modifications I had 195/55/r16 run flat, changed to 205/55/r16 . I weigh 275 and figured my fat but has caused the rear spring to sag. Years ago there were spring spreaders. wedge in between spring tighten and it would spread and raise spring a little.

according to this calculator, the new tire is slightly bigger....811 rev per mile, vs 825.... 1.8% so when you speedo says 60, you are going 61.1.
The sidewall height is 2/10th of an inch taller...pretty minimal.
I would take a peek at the shock/strut. make sure it is not failed, then compare the tire centering from to back on the left side,to the right side.
I'm not a tiny gut either, and I don't think that you are overloading it...heck, still lighter than a one avg person in the front, and one in the back!!

I've had two cars in the shop lately with this same problem. Basicly the trailing arm on each was bent. Not enough you could see it in the arm, just enough you could see the wheel not centered in the wheel well.
Good Luck!!
