12 Volt Air Compressor

The Dunlop Run-Free tires on my 2006 MCSC are nearing life's end and I will replace them with non Run-Free's. Besides evaluating the possible tire replacements I want to consider how to reinflate a punctured tire. Is anyone carrying a small, light weight 12 volt air compressor? What is your opinion of this one:

Thank you for any response. I am new to this site and find it absolutely amazing. I have learned so much about my MINI and other models as well.

I've used a few over the years. You can buy them at WalMart or any autoparts place for $15-40 or so. Since they're small, it can take 10-15 minutes or more to pump up a tire, but they'll work in a pinch. I keep one from AutoZone in my boot.

And FYI, I just replaced my 16" runflats this week. I upsized to 17" tires (with lower profile) and the ride is still more comfortable than the runflats! I figures with a cell phone, AAA, and the air pump, I'm prepared for a flat. I decided not keep a bottle of Slime in the car - I'm worried I might mess up the TPMS if I used it.

Tom.

I agree with you about the smoother ride, AAA, Cell Phones, etc, that's why I am getting rid of the run-flats. Will check at NAPA for 12 volt compressors they carry. I ride mostly in Western NC. Thanks for your reply.

I'm carrying a Continental Tire ContiComfortKit from TireRack.com.

This contains an integrated sealant cannister and 12 volt compressor. It is rather expensive at $80, but I want something reliable. So, I'm depending on TireRack's judgement. The ContiComfortKit is the only one they carry.

Amazon has a large variety of different kinds with and without sealant.

in place of sealants I prefer DYNAPLUG

this tool, a pair of pliers (to pull the nail) and a pump are a good combination .... but I still carry AAA too.

if/when you shred a tire only a spare or a tow will help!

DYNAPLUG works well, I've run tires plugged this way for thousands of miles - including runflats

Another option for a compressor is this one.

It is described by Yo's Dad in this thread. I purchased one myself and appears to be a much sturdier build (and more compact) than ones I've seen at discount stores.

Pluses: sturdy build, small, doesn't "walk" on the floor while running, and uses a screw on attachment.
Minuses: perhaps a bit more pricey.

P.S. I also carry the DynaPlug.
