anyone out there running different sized tires front and back?

i need new tires on two of my volks which currently have 205/40/17 on them, i'd like to go to 215/40 or 215/45 on them and wait for the other pair to wear out and then replace them with the same size.

anyone done this? i think the 215/40 + 205/40 would be ok (pretty small difference) but the 215/45 is a bigger jump, any ideas?

You might want to talk to alex@tirerack before you buy anything.
From http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...odel=AVS+ES100
Here are some things:

Size- /Max load in pounds - /overall diameter in inches
205/45-17 stock 1235 24.3
205/40-17 current 1102 23.5
215/40-17 1074 23.9
215/45-17 1201 24.6

Biggest tire diameter goes on the rear- so 215/45-17 or 215/40-17
My first choice is to make all tires 215/45-17 due to better max load and nearest to stock tire diameter- speedo accuracy.

When the Neon was the hot autocross car (read Chysler was paying $$$) several of the top drivers were using narrower tires on the rear to get the car to rotate. In the future make sure you raotate the tires front to rear, and if they are directional, have the tires moved from side to side by having the tires removed and mounted the other way. Inside left becomes outside right, etc. 17" Volks and you are trying to save money on tires? Replace all four at once. If you need to raise money, I could use some Volks.

---> Also, don't forget your tire pressure monitor and DSC will throw a fit! Having different diameter tires will confuse the computer big time

Yup. Ani it will make handling rather "unique" on Mini 215/45 on all 4 is the best!

not a money issue, i just hate throwing away a perfectly good pair of tires. it just seems like a waste to is all...

do you know this for sure? as in, have you done this exact same thing and had problems? the reason i ask is that many people seem to give the run-flat monitor and DSC a lot of credit. personally i think they're very dumb, whenever i switch wheels from my Volks back to stock, it takes a week for the tire light to come on, even though the tire pressures between the two are off by almost 5 lbs per tire!

i think the car just takes a reading when you reset the monitor and as long as it doesn't vary outside the first 'calibration' it won't sense anything wrong, but i haven't tested this with different size tires. I've only tried the different tires pressures front back and it takes that just fine.
