Min tread depth for track/Phil Wicks?
Min tread depth for track/Phil Wicks?
Hey all,
I'm running a set of 17" Potenza RE050A's on my MCS that are down to 5/32" in the rear and 4/32" in the front. In 30 days I'm scheduled for a Phil Wicks track day.
Questions:
-What's the minimum (good) tread depth for street tires on the track?
-Should I swap in my other all-season set of wheels to save the tread on the sticky tires until my track day? I commute about 50 miles/day and have 20k on the tires already.
-I might autocross between now and then. I've only done that once before, so I'm still novice. Will that beat up the tires too much for the track?
Thanks for any and all advice.
-Ben

My $.02 says thrown on your A/S for now until your track day/AX. 20k is a decent amount of miles and you do a fair amount of everyday driving. Save the fun tires for the track and just live with your A/S's on the street.
Definitely throw on your All Seasons until the track day. Also put the tires with the most tread on the front. If the day turns out to be wet, you may want to consider your all-seasons for the track day.
