16" oem wheel weights - x-lite vs. s-winder

A few months back, I weighed both wheels on a calibrated doctor's scale. The results for anyone interested:

r84 x-lite: 18.5 lbs
r102 s-winder: 17.5 lbs

Comparing your results to this

and considering this post http://www.mini2.com/forum/faq.php?f...heel_tire_tech
and discounting typos, it appears that wheel weights vary by as much as a pound, even among wheels of a single type.

Yes, I was a bit surprised that the x-lites came in almost a pound higher over what has been accepted as a reliable spec. I really did the test to determine the weight of the s-winders because I had not been able to find a believable number - somebody here posted 16 lb 10 oz but the calibration was suspect. I decided to do the x-lites at the same time for an apples to apples comparison. I'm attaching the zero balance photos, which show that true zero on the scale I used was very slightly above indicated zero. I also weighed two of each wheel together, with the following results:

2 x-lites: 37.0 (average 18.5 each)
2 s-winders: 34.8 (average 17.4 each)

The x-lites I weighed were produced in 04. It's possible that earlier production may have been lighter, but I can't imagine a 1 lb variation in the same production cycle - that would be huge!

It's probably the scale.

Try taking the wheel to a postal scale or shipping scale, something digital and see what you get.

One thing you can see the difference between the two rims.

S-winders are light.
Here is a scale I trust.

S-winders are 16 lbs 10 oz each.

Actually that's the scale I think is suspect ...we don't know when that digital scale was calibrated, and to me, digital doesn't automatically make it accurate. The scale I used is the kind you find in a doctor's office, where you slide the weight until the beam is evenly suspended in midair. It's pretty sensitive, because if you nudge the weight just a bit, the beam will rise or fall. If doctors use it for recording weight in medical records, I figure it's good enough for wheels.

Anyway, you're right that at least we know the relative difference between the two rims ...

But a scale built to weigh people may not be accurate in the less than 20 lb range. Now if you get on the scale while holding the wheel, that would probably be more accurate, then subtract your wt. Just a suggestion
