I have a question isnt your valve stems supposed to be metal for the TMPS, my car says I have it but the valve stems are rubber. Im very confused since I wana get new rims and tires and have to figure this out before I buy anything. Also the rims I want have an offset of 40 so what size spacers would I need?

 

Some R56 MINI's came through with rubber valve stems & use the ABS sensor to tell if a tire is low. That is the same system used on R50 & R53 MINI's. The TPMS is the one with the metal stems. I don't know when they started coming on R56's but it is a fairly recent addition. If you don't have them I'd consider myself lucky.

 

I believe the metal stems started around the August 07 builds.

 

So if I have the ABS sensor I dont need to worry about anything extra for my car? Thanks fo rthe info guys! The metal stems seem like such a hassel.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the hassle with metal valve stems? I've had them on a couple of sets of tires and never noticed any big inconvenience.

I have an R56 going into production in the next couple of days and plan to use my old summer rims on it, should any wheel be able to have the the new TPMS installed on it?

The hassle isn't with the metal valve stems, it's with the TPMS that is attached to the valve stem. The TPMS may or may not fit your old rims, but likely it won't as I believe there must be a flat spot for the TPMS to mount up correctly.

Guess I should check w/ Tire Rack... Would be a bummer to have to drop another $800 bucks or so on another set of rims.

I did a little digging around at Tire Rack. It appears that the TPMS is compatible with ASA JH6 wheels. I would call Alex & verify though.

And if you call Alex you might want to find out if the JH6 will take the 14mm lugs.

 

According to the Tire Rack website they will take 14mm lug bolts.

 

ya i have rubber valve stem on my r56 s and ever time i change to my track tires my worning light comes on. the garage said it is ok and that i need just to reset the comp.

 

Just converted a set of 2005 R53 17" rims to work with the R56 TPMS sensors. Stripped the tires off and the rims have the flat spot around the valve stem hole to mount the metal valve stems and the pressure monitors. Installed the sensors, mounted the tires and put the system into reset and it all worked just like intended. I do find the direct pressure monitors a little annoying as I keep tweaking tire pressures by two pounds to tune the handling only to get an alert when I drive off. Just can't remember to reset the system every adjustment.

I suspect anything made in the last two years will be compatible with this system if they intended to put those wheels on any car built after 2005. The regulation reads that for the first year some percentage of cars had to have a TPMS, then the percentage increased every year. I can't imagine wheel manufacturers were designing and casting non-TPMS rims and TPMS rims.

Of course, YMMV.

 

I hate to hack this thread, but it looks as if its almost dead...

I have a September 07 build MCS....16" Wheels with metal Valve stems....The window sticker says I have 17" wheels and TPMS....something was obviosly switched around at the dealership....

I followed the manual's instructions on how to check to see if the TPMS was active or inactive (using the button on the end of the blinker), and the TPMS is not in the computer at all! Does this mean its been deleted from the computer?

 

God, that sounds like some intro to a bad infomercial on sunday morning TV.

If you have metal valve stems (meaning dull silver factory installed valve stems ) the factory TPMS valve stems come with this large ugly mushroom shaped cap that reminds you it is a pressure monitoring system.

Another way to tell if you have the TPMS is to check the speedo when you start the car next time. If memory serves me the right most bottom? idiot light is yellow and shows the profile of a tire with an exclamation point in the middle of it for a couple of seconds as diagnostics take place then it disappears.

in the OBC you have to get into the OBC menu and it would be the fourth item on the selection list. Why they did not provide access to these functions thru the information center I don't know. It sure would have made life a lot easier.

 

So my Production Date is 7/01/07. Does that means that I don't have a TPMS installed and the car is using the ABS system ? I just bought the R90 from a fellow NAM member, and I would like to install them tomorrow. Please Adive..

I think I derived the answer to this from the first few posts but want to make sure it's clear to me since we're ready to buy new "shoes" for Sly Cooper....(and get his snow shoes off).

If the car (2007 MCS) has RUBBER valve stems then the TPMS uses the ABS instead of TPMS units installed in the wheels? That would be a huge relief really, knowing we could just swap the wheels and hit the road! Our MCS is a June 2007 build (one of the first here in N. Virginia).

 

Does anyone know hot to reset the TPMS on "direct" system cars when you swap over to winter wheels with the correct metal monitoring valves?

 

I found a reply elsewhere. Apparently it can be done on 08 cars without NAV. Procedure is in the book.

 

Go through the OBC options with the stalk until you get to the TPS options. Choose to reset and push the stalk. The TPS won't clear until you start to move the car after the reset.

 

I'm considering a 2nd set of wheels/tires for winter use for my '08 MCS.
I found a set of barely used Bridgespokes w/ Contis and, the seller tells me, TPMS.
How can I determine if TPMS sensors are actually in the tire unless I put them on my car?
