WHY DO PEOPLE BUY 205-40-17s

OK. I've heard all that's bad about this tire size. Low load rating, pot hole problems, rough ride, etc. But, there must be a plus besides lower weight--or is there? Is it just for show. I bought a set of used wheels that have Yokohamas S drives on them in this size. By the way, the load rating is 84, even on the 205-40-17s. Is there any improvements, like handling, etc. that I can look forward to, or is it all for show? I would really like to know. Thanks.

prolly cuz of the effective lower final drive (better accel) that is why i run 205/45R16

i have been using 83 rated tires, just do some math and make sure you don't go over the weight, the stock tires have a healthy safety factor

They are cheaper than 205/45R17 and lighter. I would consider those two conditions a plus.

I would really like to know. Thanks.
Frequent availability - due to being a common size often lower cost.

Throw in lower side wall

so you end up with a bit better turn in response as well.

Like all things cars, it's a trade off.

It will also give you more room to avoid rubbing which may be necessary if they are running aggressive offsets.

Each car has an optimal size based on design and weight with and without passengers.

For the MINI, 205/45-17 gives the best blend of tire size, load rating, good handling and comfort within design constraints.

Other cars that need a small wheel and tire with less weight or even 2 seaters could get by with 205/40-17.

205/40-17 is a popular size. It used to have even lower load ratings but some tires today are at the limit for the MINI, about 84 load rated.

Looking at the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 as an example
205/40-17 $125 each,fits 7-8" wide rims, perfect:7.5" rim 84 load, 23.4" tire diam.22 lbs
215/40-17 $153 each, fits 7-8.5" wide rims, perfect:7.5" rim 83 load, 23.8" tire diam.19 lbs
215/45-17 $135 each, fits 7-8" wide rims, perfect:7" rim 91 load, 24.6" tire diam.24 lbs. Note-load rating higher due to XL tire.

So if you want lower profile side walls and lower weight with moderate cost then one option is 205/40-17 or even 215/40-17 (more costly).

45 series tire is more forgiving for daily street driving but 40 series is OK depending on how carefully you drive and your road conditions. If you have poor roads best to stick with 45 series or taller. I've hit bad potholes with 65 series tires and done well but I wouldn't try that with a 40 series tire.

Street manners and comfort will vary alot with the tire you choose even if it is 205/40-17. There is a good selection of tires that will fit in that size.

For other cars it's quite a good size using the 17x7" wheel. Good example is a Honda Fit. A 205/45-17 would be too large without rubbing even with stock suspension.

Normally you're right on the money, but this time I don't think so...

there is no "best" tire size for any car. User requirements and preferences bias the equation based on very subjective needs. This means what may be best for one isn't best for another. There are many acceptable choices, you just have to find what really fits your needs the best.
