Tire and wheel size

Hi everyone,

I have gotten interested in autox with my MINI 2006 JCW. I am looking to do some wheels and tires. I want to go to a 225/50x15 on a Kosei K1 TS. My question is will it fit without any problems as the rim has a 38 offset I think .

The reason for this size is so I can drive on the street and autox without changing tires at the track. The tires I am looking at are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup. How good of a set up will this be? Is anyone using this combo?

I do not drive the car but on the weekends and then only to the events. I am in FL so weather is not a problem. It has camber plates, control arms and coilovers.

Thanks for your help
Terry

Hi, you need to post this in the race section,
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=95000
Or the tire section, it won't be seen here by many people into '06 MINI's, Have fun, MB

I don't think 15" wheels will fit around the JCW brakes.

If you want to go with R-compounds the Kumho V710 is a popular choice with 15 and 16 sizes.

I beleive that the 15x7 K1TS wheels are one of the few sets that WILL clear the JCW brakes!
The +38 offset doesn't leave a whole lot of room for clearance, but they do clear, this is what I run for my street wheels.

*But he could always sell off the JCW parts and do an 11.75 Wilwood kit....

You can confirm with Tirerack if JCW brakes will fit Kosei K1 TS in 15x7. I think they can fit.

Check this for your SCCA class for autocrossing-
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=95000
I think you may be in DSP even with your street tires.

I will merge your two threads on the same topic together and leave in Tires and wheels.

What is your suspension? JCW? If so then 15x7 Kosei K1 TS would be OK.
Do you have the smaller early 12mm bolts or later 14mm bolts? Just check with Tirerack that the K1 TS fits the larger bolts just in case.

Wheel offset should be OK for you. Tire size for best results is 225/45-15 but there aren't good street tires in that size however, Toyo Ra1 can be driven on the street and at autocross or track. It's better suited for track and won't last that long if you do much street driving.

Michelin pilot sport cups are expensive and better suited for track or lapping sessions. It's a waste to use them for street- I have them.

You might look at some other choices that last longer for street use but give good traction. I like 205/50-15 for the smaller tire diameter and good tire selection. 225/50-15 is possible but it is taller at 23.9"- still usable and your choice. It is wider and heavier than the 205/50-15.

If you look at 225/50-15-
In extreme performance summer tires:
BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KD for $148 each 200 treadwear 24 lbs 24" tire diam and different tires for right and left.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...ay.jsp?ttid=12

If you look at Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R (excellent tire)
in 195/50-15 $104 each on backorder, 180 treadwear,fits rims 5.5-7" wide, 21 lbs 22.7" tire diam

Or if you look at Kumho MX
in 205/50-15 $79 each on backorder, 220 treadwear, fits rims 5.5-7" wide, 19 lbs 23.1" tire diam. (a good lightweight solution for combo street tire and autocross- or consider Falken ST615 or Hankook Z212)

Back to 225/50-15
In Max performance summer tires:
Not so good selection!
Dunlop SP sport 9000 $129 each 280 treadwear 22 lbs
Pirelli PZero System $170 each 140 treadwear 22 lbs

Not much in 205/50-15 at tirerack
however for Falken ST615 $76 each 21.2 lbs
or Hankook Z212 $81 each 19.5 lbs ($89 each in 225/50-15)

But Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 in
195/50-15 is $93 each back ordered 280 treadwear 19 lbs 22.7" tire diam

For a sticky tire that can legitimately be used on the street to drive to events, you might check out the Yokohama A048 in 225/50-15. I've used a set just the way you're thinking about. They are dramatically stickier than the tires Minihune mentions, but on the flip side they won't last as long as what he's suggesting either. Pick your poison.

The A048s work well in the rain. I used them for auto-x rain tires, and for those events that I couldn't take a second set of tires to (such as when my son went with me to compete in FJr). In the rain, after the second run on a short 40 second course in a steady rain, the tires where bone dry after a few minutes in grid. The more conventional street tires on the cars around me were still wet.

I don't have experience with the Michelins on my car, but have driven a SM SRT4 with them and was not overwhelmed with their grip. Some of that may have been the car though.
