Plastic wheels?

I guess it was only a matter of time...

Leave it to the Germans to come up with these!

Sorta looks like recycled material all right.

Actually kind of weird looking.

I would have expected that technology to hit skateboards, skis and tennis rackets first.

Better not hit one of those jumbo potholes in my area with those rims. Probably would shatter although they claim they've done extensive testing.

Quote:
The advantage of plastic wheels is that the material combines high specific strength with low weight, and it looks good as well. It consists of two main components – a matrix and reinforcing fibers. Through their interaction the two components achieve better properties in the composite material than they do separately.

What's the future coming to????

One obvious advantage of plastic is it can be transparent. Imagine if some of the detailing freaks here with OCD had some of these! Must... clean... backs of rims...

The first prototype wheels were seen in 2005 and these Forgiato Radurra wheels were shown at SEMA 2006. More pictures here.

I used to work for Fraunhofer. Neat. But I was working on nerd stuff, not car stuff

Those plastic 'disk' wheels look like they would have poor brake cooling.

I can see it now. Optional Brembo "Backside Wheel Washer" option which reroutes the windshield or headlight washer hoses to sprayers on the calipers. Of course, the optional squeegee attachment would be highly recommended as well.

Put those wheels on a MINI and watch as your brakes disappear within a couple days.

You mean we aren't supposed to clean the back of the rims? (This is a SERIOUS question!) I've been cleaning the front & back of my rims every time...oops!
