wheels - 16 vs 17

Hello all,

I figured I may as well make my first post interesting. I'm looking for information on pros & cons of 16 vs 17 inch wheels for an S. I plan on adding coil-overs for track days in the near future. Here's what I can think of so far

17

Pros fits bigger brakes

17" Cons - weight & expense

17" Pros - Usually better tire selection

Ok.. noob (me) hit enter too fast and inadvertently posted.... I'm sure that happens to every guy.... BUT.. that makes this post #2!

what I meant to finish:

I'm looking for input on pros & cons of 16 vs 17 inch wheels for an S. I plan on adding coil-overs and camber plates&arms for track days in the very near future (as well as a bbk.) Here's what I can think of so far (and btw, I'm still running s-lites now....)

17
Pros - fits bigger brakes

Cons - Heavier than 16s
16
Pros - lighter than 17s

Cons - smaller brake rotors req'd (12.2" Wilwood max??)
too low with coilovers and 45 or 40 profile tires?
TIA -

Tom

2006 MCS (I'll get to a real sig one of these days....)

Here is a previous post about 16 vs. 17

read post #6

As far as brakes go, i would leave them stock diameter, and upgrade rotors/pads/brake fluid.

cheaper, easier to do and will provide enough performance.

You have to research wheel weights, not all 17s are heavier than 16s.

Ideally, wheel size (dia.) should be determined by braking needs. Width and offset are considerations too, but for different reasons - width will affect weight to. And, forged or not forged $$$$$ or not

My 17"x7" BBS RGRs weigh 16.1 pounds and are forged and cost if I remember, $600..00 each new. My 17x7 Team Dynamic Pro Race 1s weigh 16.1 pounds also, but are not forged and cost $175.00 each new. Strength is another consideration...

Stick with an offset around 38-40mm.

Agreed. I'm considering the SSR Type C (17x7.5 = 13.7 lbs 16x7 = 11 lbs) and the Motegi Traclite(17" 15 lbs.)

I started looking at tire reviews and low and behold, that's where so many 16 v 17 threads are... wheels under wheels. Guess I was in suspension mode....

Thanks for the help. I'm looking forward to getting more goodies for the car and providing some valuable input on the forum.

Yes but.... the lightest 16 is lighter than the lightest 17
And yes no one mentioned the width factor.

Of course tire choice should be a major factor in this. So you save a few lbs in wheel weight and then lose it by going with heavy tires.

Which leads to...
17"
If you want major footprint there's more choices with 17s

16x8s are hard to come by. 17x8 not so, for example.

16" Pro
Generally speaking(that's for you meb ) better ride quality.
