Suspension USS and subframe alignment
USS and subframe alignment
Have any of you USS folk incurred any alignment problems with the subframe and the USS? I did not have an opportunity to finsh this install this weekend, but I thought that if the subframe were mis-aligned the USS would not install very easily...or at all. Just thinking out loud...
Camber. It is 2.5 degrees on the driver's side and one degree on the pasenger side. The BMW/Mini tech said "the camber is identical left to right, there is no problem with the subframe, but there appears to be a problem with the Megans perches." I was speechless
So I began to focus on a few components, the subframe - based upon others' experience - was one area. Once I established that the subframe was installed correctly, and, that there is no problem with the Megans, I drove my car into my freshly cleaned and level garage and used two very primitive tools to check camber; a four foot level and a 25' tape measure. One wheel is tilted in at the top if the rim 9/16" farther than the other.
The Megan perches are identical left and right and can only be installed one way. The same difference can be measured directly on the springs.
This will be fixed on Thursday. I cannot understand how a tech aligned the car and insisted this is correct. But so be it. It points to many obvious problems but two glaring ones are asymetric camber and camber thrust, and, asymetric SAI.
There are a number of folks who believe, I think they're right, that the subfrane cannot be mis-aligned. It goes in one way and that's it. The M7 USS is perhaps one way to verify this. Yes, it has some flexibility to it, but if the subframe is off by a lot, the USS will not fit.
I'm just poking around...playing devil's advocate.
