Suspension Does Bilstein SP settle over time?
Does Bilstein SP settle over time?
Hi,
Thanks for the help of NAM members I finally installed upgraded from Eibach/stock shocks to Eibach/Bilstein SP. The ride is sweet!!!
In fact it is so comfortable, all the harshness with the stock shocks were gone. Body movement is much more controlled, no excessive diving or bouncing. It is a great setup.
However I do notice that my car is sitting slightly higher than before, probably about half an inch higher. Anyone know if the ride height will settle over time? Also will the ride gets stiffer after the shocks has broken-in?
Also, interesting the ride height is very susceptable to elevation change. What I mean is, if the road is *slightly* sloped to the left, I have measured that the rear-right wheel gap is 10mm more than my rear-left. However, there is no difference if the slope is even. Could anyone explain that??

Bilsteins use a high pressure gas charge and a mono-tube with a large piston on which that charge effectively acts, which can increase ride height relative to other shocks (especially blown out old ones
).
).
As I noted in a diff thread, I added the H&R springs and Bilstein shocks. My drop is not as much 1.5" as other have gotten with the H&R sand stock shocks . I think I dropped by approx 1 inch. So I think I confirming your 1/2 diff.
BTW, I am happy with my ride, drop and overall look.

Can I use any lowering spring with blisteins?
You should not see any drop in the Steins. I have had them on my 69 Camaro for 3 yrs and even did an engine swap and new wheels/tires and the car actually sat about a .5" higher than before. I do have after market springs. I know that the VW guys have no problem with the steins either.
