Suspension R55 'Mature' Coil Overs
R55 'Mature' Coil Overs
So, I'm contemplating an update to my suspension, and weighing my options for new coil overs.
I currently have Megan Racing Euro 2 coils on my Clubman, but they are getting a little old. I've had them on the car for 4 years, and I bought them used with an unknow history. They have served me well, and still ride decent, but I'd like to perform a little suspension refresh. For my next set up, I'd like to get a similar ride height, but not sure I need adjustable damping. My current ride height (center of hub to fender) is 12.75" F / 12.5" R.
Here are the coil overs I am considering:
- Bilstein B14
- H&R Street or RSS
- Eibach Pro-Street (discontinued, but seem to be available on Ebay...)
I would prefer the Bilsteins, so I'm trying to find a decent deal on them. The B14s seems like they will give me what I want out of my next suspension journey. According to their specs, they should install right at my current height. The H&R versions should get me close on ride height, but the Street might ride too soft, and not sure if I want to spend the money on the RSS to get the performance out of them. The Eibach are the wild card here... The Eibach are discontinued, but show up on Ebay for a decent price. All my research shows they are more in line with the H&R set up, though.
If anyone that has any of these coil overs would like to provide their anecdotes of their experiences, I'd be willing to hear them.

I can only talk about the B14's, which I had on my B-Spec, which I didn't (legally) drive on the street. They would be great on smooth roads, but it seems like they would be pretty rough on bad roads. I drove them at Sebring and every time I went over an expansion joint it was bad.

B14's are great coilovers but they ride firm, not harsh but very firm, but handle very well. In most cases H&R are custom tuned and rebadged Bilstein dampers so the ride is nearly the same. If you want a smooth ride with decent handling KW coilovers are a better choice. I personally don't like them because they are a twin tube design but I had them on my E46 M3 and they were a decent compromise. When it comes to Eibach, just about them make is trash, saggy springs, cheap coilovers that last maybe 50k, there just isn't anything they make that is quality.
