 no problemo, jlm. questions and concerns from rational, intelligent, hype-free people are always welcome - someone will learn, whoever is correct.

since i live in a condo, i can't put in a lift. trying to measure/plumb something vertically with the car on the wheels seems difficult, since colista flockheart isn't my gf and i'm not friends with the underpants gnomes.

the plastic bar is flush with the rear wheel face. i project the laser beam parallel to that plane forward and measure it's distance on 1 side from some convenient chassis feature. then using the same bar, laser and target on the other side of the car, i measure the distance on that side.

i played around a lot trying to find the chassis feature to measure to. i even tried a long wooden block reaching far under the car to some common center point. but the vertical lips on the chassis that you can butt up against right next to the lift blocks worked out well. thety are far enough from the laser (over 60") to make the measurement meaningful. i tape the quad rule paper to an aluminum sheet, butt the end against the lip, square it to the ground, and shoot the laser to the paper. then i flip the sheet over and butt the same end against the lip on the other side, so i'm measuring from the same end of the paper.

maybe i lucked out with how my car was built, but when i checked the factory settings using this, the 2 sides were within about 1/16th to 3/32, which worked to about 0.1 degree. i don't have my bentley manual handy, but i think this is supposed to be within 0.2 degree. so i said "ok, close enough.."

i should probably have my car checked in a shop to see if this is correct!!

last time i did it, I squeaked one of these under there: but it is always a good idea to run your tires up on some sort of spacers, like 2 x 10 planks
