The type of cage you have becomes important if you auotcross. A bolt-on keeps you in street mod, a weld-on puts you in the prepared classes.

Thats because the weld in cages will provide additional rigidity in the chassis.

BMW CCA specs bolt in rollcages for their spec mini series. Check out point 6. Rollcage. At least they don't spec out a sole source vendor.

[Has become a new thread.] Question: Will a roll bar (not cage) affect the stiffness of a chassis? If so, to what extent for...

*Autocross?

*Lapping?

I'm curious as my roll bar (not cage) will go in on Saturday

Thanks in advance, everyone:smile:

I was wondering if anyone installed one themselves yet? I just picked one up from another mini that was involved in a rollover from a race. It was still in good condition and the guy wanted $300 for it, so i bought it. I'm just slowly building my car up because i want to do some autocrossing.

I really question the need for a cage or roll bar if your just going to autox/solo. The mini chassis is quite stiff, you don't need that kind of protection for autox applications and, it will just add weight.
Now, if you plan a lot of track time, it could be worthwhile.

Roll Cage

If you live in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, or Michigan, you should consider that Solo I or Solo II with Midwest Council of Sports Car clubs does not require a roll cage, but Wheel to Wheel or modified cars do have to have a Cage.

It has been a fun way to learn about handling my MCS while keeping it show room stock.

One thing to note about MCSCC Autox is they run on a track, not a parking lot. With tracks such as Road America, Blackhawk, and Gingerman on the schedule =

Rollcage

Driving a car with a rollcage on the street is pretty dangerous. While strengthening the chassis is a good thing, your head meeting a rollcage in an accident is quite another.

Roll Cage

Head vs cage: I hadn't thought about that, but in the classes where we do have to have a cage or a bar, we have to pad the cage any where near the drivers head, and of course the driver has to wear a helmet.

BTW, We (Midwest Council) have never run an AutoX at Road America. We could but the staffing is a problem. I have only done Autox at Blackhawk Farm, maybe Il try some of the others next year.

In classes above stock, or in Wheel to Wheel racing we have to have a cage or a Bar depending on the class.
