Opinions on wheels

Well, with Spring on it's way, I've realized I need to either refinish my BBS RG-R wheels or buy something else.

I have some curbing on the BBS, and need to have them repaired and painted. This will likely cost $500-$700 to do. These wheels kick serious a**, and weigh only 16 lbs in this size, and are forged. ~$650 each wheel.

My other option is to buy new wheels, and I've been looking at the Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2, for ~$800 new. These are similar in weight, and have that race look that I like. The question is refinish the BBS or buy new? If buy new, which color? I'm leaning toward Silver or Anthracite, but gloss black has been growing on me too. Thoughts?

My car currently:

Seems like quite a lot for repair/refinish. Unless they're really bad, clean and degrease 'em, get yourself some LABMETAL or comparable 2-stage metal repair, fill in, sand, re-fill any low spots, then use touch-up paint or spray yourself. Wurth makes good wheel touch-up spray paint

I appreciate the reply, but having someone professionally fill / file / paint wheels isn't cheap. I'm not really interested in half-assing the repair, frankly. The DIY movement is cool, but I'm not metal putty filling or spray painting $2,500 wheels. My cost estimate is high, so repair will likely be a good bit cheaper actually. Painting or powdercoating is ~$90/ wheel.

The BBS aren't really in that bad of shape besides one wheel. All 4 have paint fading, and one has serious curbing. Having said that, it's just a tough call because I'm fairly certain that I could sell them for $600 or so without issue, and then buy the TD wheels for $750, eating only $150 cost.

Not really a fan of the TD 1.2s. They just look like a generic aftermarket wheel to me, kinda blah. I think what you have right now looks better. Plus it seems kinda counter productive to be $150 out of pocket for a set of wheels that are a downgrade. I'd say refinish what you have.

Curbage is that horrendous? 6-700 is way too expensive to get fixed. My guy fixes wheels and it costs even less than half that for 4 wheels. I'd say take it to someone else...

As I said, it will likely be less. I haven't had an in-person estimate yet. You also need to understand that proper wheel repair requires welding in a bead of aluminum in order to fix gouges or loss of material, filing / machining the excess, blasting, etching, painting, clearing. To do the job correctly isn't cheap. People think that throwing some Bondo glazing putty and Duplicolor wheel paint at a wheel fixes things, but it's cheesy and won't last.

Regarding the Team Dynamics styling, I like it. It's one of the proven race quality wheels, that's not a BBS. I can't stand Enkei RPF's, Sparco's are crappy, Rotiforms are for stancing, Rays are too much $$, etc. That said, I like my BBS' more, but change can be good. I'm open to other options, though.

Here they are on an R53:

First off you said curbing. Never mentioned gouging out chunks of the BBS wheels. That of course will add up in price compared to just curb rashes. And I've bought many wheels, one with a gouge and had it properly repaired and even went ahead and tracked on it, so I do know what it means for a proper professional repair....

Haha. People are getting emotional on the forum lately.

Anyhow, the point is I'm willing to pay to have them professionally repaired. I have a sandblasting box at my disposal, as well as multiple machine shops & all that. I simply rather have someone who does this all day, every day, do it. Since we've officially digressed, do you have any suggestions for light, strong, race inspired wheels?

We have a guy in Alaska that does wheel repair. He quoted me $150 a wheel to do repair and powder coat. These are OZ Racing Canova Diamantata and probably cost that much new. I'll do the DIY gig myself.

That said, you should sell me the RG-Rs for dirt cheap to fund your new wheels.

That's a fair price. I think it's only too expensive if the scenario is you're trying to fix cheap wheels, that could otherwise just be purchased brand new for a comparable cost. This is not the case with my wheels. $100/wheel for quality powdercoat is standard, plus all the other work that goes into it... Hahaha; dirt cheap? No, my friend.

I forgot all about OZ... I kind of like those Leggendas; bit of a rally look though, and the giant branding kills it for me. The Enkei's are kind of "Meh" for me, no offense.

I think they're alright. A lot like the Enkei PF01 in terms of looks. The MINI community seems to like them well enough.

They're not forged, but OZ's HLT process supposedly makes them nearly as strong as forged 6061 T6 aluminum. I only mention it because the spoke design is a bit dainty, which always concerns me with daily driven street wheels. In short, they have a good rep; buy them if you like them...

I have oz ultraleggeras 17x7.5 and I run them on the street, on year two no issues, and I got them used. and I frequently drive spirited. New England roads aren't the most forgiving

Nice! What colors are yours? Tire rack only seem to have 17x7 and only silver, black and matte graphite silver.
My eye sight seems to deceive me but those look like gold.

that was like a gun metal or titanium color. nor did i think they were matte. ive since painted them black. they were defiantly too dark for a plain silver

I'm running TD Pro Race 1.2 in 17x7.5 size, flat black. I really love these wheels. Here's some pics... note I'm running 215/45R17 BFG Rivals on these, so the sidewall is a little higher than stock. Weight is around 18 lbs, though, so maybe heavier than your BBS wheels.

FWIW, forged wheels will probably be lighter/stronger than normal cast wheels (incl the "spin cast" TD style, if I remember their PR right). Might be worth just getting those powdercoated black if you like them...

I like them quite a bit, actually. Though, last week I sent out my BBS' for refinishing and powder. TIG fill & file on one wheel, with some light filing on the others + sandblasting + "Porsche Silver" powder = $420. If I didn't do this, I would've bought the Team Dynamics 1.2

I vote take some time, sand the edges of the curbing yourself, and then plasti-dip them black.... They'll look sweet, and with the way plasti-dip works, you'll barely notice the curb marks
