R/S axle replacement

Read the Bentley repair manual about how to do this job, which, from my expierence from many years ago, seems more complicated than necessary. I have, in the past, on other front wheel drive cars been able to replace axles by removing the tie rod end so that the turning the wheel gave enough clearance to remove the shaft. Any thoughts from the inmates?

What else is the Bentley saying? I've done a couple, and don't really remember too many steps.

Axle nut
Carrier bearing bolts (probably has an official name)
lower ball joint

yank out

It's been awhile, but I can't think of anything else.

They basically suggest undoing..bottom ball joint, tie rod end and a couple of other things...seems like over doing it.
Thanks for your reply.
