Suspension PS110/KWv2 WMW/ST... for track
PS110/KWv2 WMW/ST... for track
Hi guys,
I've gone back to early 2011 posts and can't find a direct asnwer to this question. Most coilover related questions are people who only care about looks and/or are trying to save money, and that isn't really what I'm going for.
I'm looking for coilovers at as reasonable a price point as possible for track and autoX. The car is my DD, but I don't really care about ride quality all that much, I care far more about handling. I took my 2010 JCW out to some mountain roads yesterday to really put it through paces, and the suspension is farrrrr too loose up front for my liking. I'm putting torque arm inserts in this weekend to stiffen power transfer up but I need a lot more from the suspension before taking the thing on the track.
I've never done suspension work before, so I want to buy something that I can build on top of and learn how to dial in for best performance. That said, my experience right now is low, so spending many thousands for many adjustment options is wasted money. I want something I can grow into, but also something that doesn't blow my whole budget. Thus, PS110's and KWv2's seem best. I know a lot of people like STs, but they seem more for the looks/DD crowd and I don't really fit in there. That said, if the difference between KWv2's and ST's aren't huge, I can find another way to spend $1000 on other improvements (lighter wheels, various bushings, STS, Michelon Pilot SS's, brake pad upgrades, the list is pretty long!).
Thanks in advance for the replies.

I would immediately rule out the ST's if you're main focus is track duty.
Of the 3, I would pick the TSW spec KWv2's that WMW sells. They even better set up for track duty as they are valved for the Mini and run 60mm constant ID springs rather than factory style springs.
From what Ive read, the PSS10's are more geared toward the street.
Another more affordable option might be Fortune Auto. Check out my thread regarding those. I think I might take a flyer on those.

If you are serious about track , get something that is designed for it. That would rule out most of the stuff that many people put on their cars. Try looking at:
AST 5100
Kw competitions (not kw2 or kw3)
Ohlins
Most dd stuff would really not hold up to 30 or more track days. These suspensions are not cheap but they do hold out pretty well. And in the end, the may be less expensive than constant repairs.
