Bedding JCWs?

Is there any type of bedding process suggested for JCW brakes? I have a brand new set that I will be installing soon.

Also, those of you who have upgraded...did you notice in decrease in speed due to the extra weight?

Break in Period for JCW Brakes and other Items

What size JCW brakes are you getting? 12.1 or 12.4?

The break-in period for new MINI brakes including JCW brakes is 300 miles or 500 kilometers. That includes when you replace components. I generally tell people when I sell them a new MINI to drive "gently" for the first tank of gas and then after that drive normally (no heavy acceleration runs above 4,500 rpms).

For the curious:

Engine and Differentials - 1,200 miles
Tires - 200 miles
Brake system - see above
Clutch - 300 miles

thanks, because ive seen some brake components that have you go to an empty insterstate and slame the brakes repeatedly from 70mph etc.

I am not sure what size JCWs I have. I was completely unaware there were two sizes. Well, i know 2nd gen jcw are different than first gen jcw (aka 2nd gen stock).

Thats what I have though....New brakes from an 08 model. I assume those are 12.1?

Way to find out Brake Disc Size

If your disc brake caliper says John Cooper Works you'll need to measure across the disc for either 12.1 or 12.4 inches. If its 12.4 inches you have the Brembo 4 piston brakes versus the first version of the John Cooper Works 2 piston brakes at 12.1 inches.

Just had my JCW Sport Brake Kit installed.

No speed issues sensed, but they brake smooth like butter and are more efficient to be sure.

Excellent upgrade IMO especially since the kit came down in price from about $1,500 to $600.00. Installed at MINI - $1,100.00

From my experience, all brake pads need bedding in procedures to be done.

Can't get these from dealer any less than $570.00 for the kit.....as that is dealer wholesale/cost, and they retail for just over that for a limited time at Morristown MINI.

Book rate for this installation is 3.7 hrs for front and rear.

And since I had 72,000 miles on the MINI, and it needed brake work anyways which would have cost me about $700.00 .........

Techincally - I ended up with the JCW Sport bake kit installed for $400.00 bucks more.....

Guess it is all on how you rationalize at things.

How do you like them so far ?

Go easy first 200 miles or so, after that they should be bedded in just fine.

Follow the accepted bed-in procedure from any of the pad manufacturers.

Usually some hard braking followed by a short cool off until you smell the pads burning off the excess resins.

And where did you get a set for $180.........!?

Sounds more like that he purchased used set of standard OEM R56 brakes from an 08 model.
