Suspension Engine mount question for suspension folks
Engine mount question for suspension folks
I recently replaced all three engine mounts and I am still surprised by how much the engine still moves around. I used inserts in the previous lower mount and eventually removed the larger of the two due to excessive vibration.
Any thoughts from you good kind folk?
This photo is from MiniMania...but I honestly cannot see where this fits??? I do agree with MiniMania's observation that a sloppy engine movement will affect certain aspects of suspension movement.

I think that part is for the Classic Mini's not the New MINI's. You might find this helpful, http://www.autoxcooper.com/tsw_engine_damper.html
Only way to totally eliminate engine movement is to go to solid mounts......but you won't like it. Way to much vibration. Go back with the urethane mounts at all 3 points. You will have to live with some vibration if you want to reduce engine movement.
I to have gone through what you've done and stil got crazy movement even more so on decel. I used the TSW and wasnt happy with it and now have the VIP mount which is a lot better but still feel more movement than id like. Id do solid mount if someone made em
I've made a set of solids for my race car and would be willing to make them for anyone. All aluminum. Not cheap as material is not cheap. I hand make these. I'll get a price if anyone really is interested.
I like them. When I made them some said they would be an issue, but I have had 0 issues with them. But, this is a race car and it's very loud anyway. 8-O

What is the VIP mount? Yes! Decel from high rpms is a wicked thump!!! And it jerks the whole car. Very unsettling!
I called you yesterday about this Greg...I cannot install solid mounts but had a question for you about a mod...I have poly inserts for all of the mounts. The lower figure 8 mount contributes to a lot of movement, but also allows a lot of vibration when the larger of the two is filled with poly. I thought about snipping one or two of the insert tabs...thoughts?

i have inserts in all my mounts plus the VIP mount and have NO vibration.

How much would be the solid mounts be and can you show what they look like.

Solid engine mounts? Sign me up. (if the price is right)
I'm a bit confused by your statement. You replaced them with what? Which inserts did you remove and which did you leave?
I am considering changing the lower mount to help with issue of the engine rocking under deceleration. It is worse on our car since it is an automatic and doesn't match revs on downshifts. Back when I owned an A1 chassis VW, best thing I could do to decrease that engine rocking was do smooth heel-toe downshifts and a poly front
motor mount bushing
...there are two engine mounts and one transmission mount. I replaced all three with new stock mounts and...
I installed poly inserts in the transmission mount, and installed poly inserts in both ends of the lower engine mount- between the engine and sub-frame.
The lower engine mount has two bushing. The larger of these two transmitted a fair amount of vibration into the cabin after I installed the insert...I have since removed this insert.
The upper mount has no insert and none is available.
I used a front lower Motorsport mount in my 89 GLI 16V - worked very nice
