Suspension Spring Comparisons
Spring Comparisons
Got a few lowering spring questions...
I'm looking at either the H&R, Eibach, Mach V, or maybe waiting for the TSW. I like that the Eibach and TSW don't lower it quite as much as the H&R or Mach V, but I read that they are a harsher ride than the H&R. Is this true? I want it to handle well, but I also don't want a bone-jarring ride. I could handle striffer than stock, but not by a ton. What's my softest spring option?
If I go ahead and buy springs (let's say H&R) can I use these springs when I decide it's time to upgrade my shocks? (konis?) What kind of options for shocks are there for the R55/R56 right now?
Thanks!

I have the Mach V springs and I love the look, they're the perfect amount of drop IMHO. When first installed, I thought the ride had actually improved, however, now that the springs have settled, I must say they can be somewhat harsh at times. They're progressive rate springs, and I think a good amount of the lighter spring rate gets taken up just by the static weight of the car and passengers. So after a little settling, you're pretty much down to the higher spring rate. I'm running them with stock non-sport dampers which might be aggravating the issue also.
My Mach V's are not soft at all, so I'd say look elsewhere.
Love the better handling over stock, love the drop, but they are brutal sometimes. I'm embarrassed to have people in my car sometimes...they always will comment on how stiff it is. Like Mattbren said, I actually thought the ride improved when I first got them, but no way now. It handles better than stock for the most part, but on anything that is not smooth, I'd say the handling suffers a bit. I like to take freeway interchanges/on ramps at a fast pace for fun, and if I'm on one with a bigger than normal expansion joint mid turn, the car definitely gets unsettled more than it should.
I think the main reason for the poor ride quality is from the lack of damper travel that they cause, but I don't know. If I had more money right now, I'd get Cross coilover's in a heartbeat. The upcoming TSW springs sound pretty good too though, not enough drop for my liking though.
