Scary Push

today while cornering I had my car push so bad i went out 3 lanes. not doing anything out of the ordenary Idont understand it im on all stock suspension with Kumho Spt tires. Not bad.
Still the car violetly pushed in the front and the rear continued on going straight. with no change. felt like the front was going completely sideways.
Was a real bust.
Anyone got any ideas why this is happening.
Its kinda freaky to drive its bad enough I dont want to drive it.

Help
Colin

So a lot of oversteer your saying? Umm if thats the case hit the handbrake and release it. Balance the car side ways using the throttle and handbrake but don't pull it on as much as the initial handbrake pull. Depending on entry speed stay in 2nd or 3rd gear with the revs up over 4,500. Have opposite wheel lock and when the back starts coming around steer back into the corner or else the back end will slap back in.

You are over-driving the stock suspension. Either slow down a bit or upgrade.

Sounds like something got loose or busted. Even a stock suspension should "tuck in" again after gently letting off the throttle. Check all the steering and swaybar links and frame mounts and do an alignment if no problems are apparent.

Time to add suspension mods to counter all the engine performance. The stock suspension is pooh.Sounds more like understeer to me???Time for rear sway bar for starters.

Again to everyone telling me to slow down.
Nothing out of the ordinary. Meaning not speeding. Duhhh.
Nothing appears to be broken. I quit driving it its parked in my garage. Im driving the vette. Much nicer to not be afraid of your car.
So as for suspension start with reccomendations im up for anything.

If nothing is broken, you over-drove the car.

It sounds like attending a BMWCCA Advanced Driver Safety Skills School / Car Control Clinic would be very helpful for you.

If you are in an understeer condition, and you just keep turning the wheel more, you are not going to make anything better.

If you weren't going very fast when this happened, and nothing was broken, there was probably some oil or such on the pavement that lowered the available grip.

Or gravel. I love sliding through gravel on pavement. Momentary understeer until the gravel ends and then grip like mad causing oversteer.

2x. These cars in stock form handle great, not like "pooh" as someone said. If you weren't driving like a jackass, then something might be wrong. In which case it's not time to throw money into the aftermarket..

Man you have some of the strangest things happen to your car.

Don't take this the wrong way but I have over driven the stock suspension and it sure sound like that to me. Like the others have said, if nothings broken, you didn't see gravel or oil, then...... If you truly didn't over drive it and it pushed "three lanes" then you might have it towed to the dealer.

Was it on level ground? I had a bit of scary understeer around a corner that dropped a little at the entry, allowing the front wheels to lose traction before I had completely decelerated.

On the uphill sweeper, were you still under substantial power? If so, it is the suspension (and/or tires) needing an upgrade. If under neutral or slightly lifted throttle, the front end should have come back in again. If this was the case, something is out of alignment (either broken or out of adjustment).

If you were doing over 100mph, then you got air under the front end and you need a better air dam.

QFT. Or at least go to an autocross or two so you can learn the limits of your car in a safe environment. I have only attended 4 autocrosses and already I am a much safer driver on the road because I am not constantly pushing my car like I used to. I learned that I was actually getting a lot closer to my cars corning limit than I really thought I was.

wow.....I was the opposite. I was always afraid to push it on the street for fear of it being uncontrollable. Quite the opposite....grip levels are MUCH higher than I thought and the car is VERY progressive at the limit - no surprises. When I overdrive it however...the front end will push hard and there's no correcting it by staying in the power.
