Suspension Diet for my wife's (S)
Diet for my wife's (S)
Ok so I am sure others are in this position, I traded my car in for the wifes Cooper S and she has given me the green light to mod it a little "so long as I dont ruin it" like I did my Evo. So that means:
No Coilovers, no loud intakes, no loud exhaust.
It is clear from reading the site light weight wheels and normal tires are move #1, a sway bar, and a short shift kit, and a mini battery are also in order; this is where the questions start:
1.) 2 piece rotors- do they make these in factory sizes? if so where can i find them?
2.) Is there a weight advantage to going to studs? (car wont be tracked much so convenience isn't a consideration)
3.) JCW exhaust - is it really worth anything performance wise? weight wise?
4.) Factory sway bar endlinks, what are they made of? what are the bushings made of?
5.) Am I missing any easy places to loose a pound or 10? (factory seats must stay)

Well I don't know how much weight your trying to save but it is hard without removing interior peices.
The Hsport Comp rear swaybar does weight less than the stock, also stiffer so it will improve your handling. That is the important thing anyway.
As for the other things I would look for what you want in the way of performance gains Handling? or Power? What do YOU want the car to do better? Then base your mod path off of that.
2 piece rotors, none that I can think of
NO noticable weight advantage to studs.
JCW exhaust, It's just a muffler. Look at our Catbacks http://www.waymotorworks.com/home.php?cat=329 there is some options.
Swaybar endlinks? Are you trying to save weight here? Cause they really aren't any less. But they are adjustable so you can dial in your suspension.

Otherwise saving weight is pretty hard. If you got a sunroof you already have a big 60lb handycap above your head. Trust me I stripped my race car and it was surprising how little taking the entire interior out will save you.

The JCW is an option becuase the wife thinks the tips are cute, if theres any power to be had I'll take it becuase I wont get away with another exhaust.
On the past few cars i have driven the bushing material was really soft (in the case of my WRX the endlink was plastic) and allowed too much deflection before loading the bar, swapping them out quickened up the steering a lot with out any real detriment to ride quality. That was the thought there.
Good to know about the studs and the H-comp.
