I put some school chalk on the bar and closed the bonnet to see where the bar was hitting the pad. With a utility knife I scored along the chalk marks and by hand dug out only the amount of padding to clear the bar. Then sprayed the area of the removed padding with plain old black enamel paint. 2-3 coats (only in the channel left buy the removed padding), letting dry between coats. You have to look hard to see the channel in the padding. I've never had anyone notice unless I pointed to the channel.
Removing the liner takes a few minutes -- and if you carve out the channel from the backside you can save yourself 99% of this work. I know that doesn't help you now . . . but I would recommend it to others as the easier way to go.

After noting where the padding needs to be removed, take the entire liner out. It is held on by the scoop support and about 15 plastic fasteners. there used to be a thread with a picture of the liner and a highlight of where each fastener is located, but I can't find it now (if someone does, please post here). One good tip, put a towel over your engine bay to catch fasteners you drop and to keep you from having to dig them out for 20 minutes.

All you have to do then is use exacto and fingers to carve out insulation from the inside, and then replace liner with the fasteners.

This is the better method, in my opinion, because it keeps the liner looking OEM and keeps insulation from raining down on the engine bay if you've cut the front of the liner.

I have run 63,000 BMP / M7 gapped miles with no problem If anything it gives a little exra cooling to the engine bay .

Hey ... "Sushi"

good to meet you today ...
Hope it was me that inspired the install ...
2 mm won't hurt ...but not the way it really should be.

If your that close (as I have seen some more than 5mm "lift")

I'll bet we could do a "soak the liner and squish" mod...

If you REALY soak the pad and then lay a couple of layers of cardboard or wood door trim or a yardstick right on top of the bar (not to much ...about 1/4 inch or less) take a deep breath and shut the bonnet (it needs to latch)

then go watch some racing on TV ... have dinner ... go to bed ...WAIT .. like overnight.
The open the bonnet, remove the "spacer material" and the padding will be crushed enough to clear the bar with a bit extra.

In the future, you should make some indication that you're kidding, like parenthesis with (jk) in it. Example:

My bonnet which has been dented by the strut-brace actually allows more cooling air to reach the engine bay (jk!)

Or

On one hand, the strut brace may not allow my bonnet to close......but I'm saving wear and tear on the hood release.........

.......April Fools!

Some gullible person may actually believe this rubbish. You wouldn't want that - would you?

Keep smiling!

This must mean that the R56 has the coolest engine bays.

Do you have the CAD pic to show the extra cooling efficiency?

Note ...
Sometimes no matter how much squishing you do the bar will still rub or lift .. my son removed his liner and tha bar still rubs on the hood stifiner support.

hell no!

offtopic, but check out Nate's stuff - he's local to you - www.wcrcompany.com - the Torro is awesome for espresso, and the Colombian is better than any Starbucks I've had for a drip machine.

I've cut back to one cup/day instead of the normal 3-4

Good tips I was not aware of those offereings and will give it a shot .

As for back on topic it is good that this thread pops up now and then to see the various methods people have come up with solutions to the Bulge situation no matter what the brand. The soak and slam still seems to take care of most issues but the trimming of the liner from the back side looks like the best solution for those with more of an problem. Thanks to all who are participating

'02 Cooper S w/no bulge

First off
Good for you Dan for cutting back on your coffee consumption.

2nd - My '02 Cooper S has no bulging bonnet. Maybe that shows it is random and not by year.

I think it is even more random that that. I have a 02 and I had three different bars with bulge " issues " . Go figure ?

If there is a bulge in my bonnet, I don't notice it anymore.

i just recently installed my bar on an '03 and used the "soak and slam" method, still has a hood bulge so im gonna try removing the liner and trimming it, seems like that is the final cure.
