How much travel on the shock is ENOUGH? (Fully compressed, Coilover)

Hmmmm
lately, i'm trying to work something out for my setup..
i'm not riding my car low low currently (maybe about a finger gap up front?)
however it still feels like its bottoming out sometimes

so how much travel should i expect to see under full compression as a safe zone?? i.e. an inch, .5 inch? etc.. the strut is self is composed of koni yellows and i set them at tiny bit away from the stiffest. i would love to slam it but just worried about bottoming out

thank you all in advance..
