Suspension Front End click/clunk...Help!!!
Front End click/clunk...Help!!!
This isn't so much a problem as it is a frustration. In short, I was/am trying to run some wheels that have a very low offset, et27 and 7.5" wide. Yes, I rub like crazy, but I knew I was going to and am ok with that, and yes I know I probably shouldn't run that low, but others have and didn't have a problem. If it helps, the diameter and tire size is exactly the same as my existing rims, 215/45/17.
Anyways, when I put the fronts on I get a click/clunk going on when coasting between 15-20mph. It does not happen when on the gas or braking. It seems to be the CV joints after having it up on jack stands and spinning the wheels, but I'm not sure. Furthermore, going back to my old wheels eliminates the noise completely.
Obviously, the wheels are the problem, but my question is whether or not there is some existing problem there that the wheels are accentuating? I guess part of my problem is I don't have a firm grasp of what components of the suspension are affected by offset. Obviously without hearing the noise it is a tough thing, but any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Could be the CV joints, but usually you don't get the clicking unless you are turning. Also, put the car into reverse and slowly back up while turning. Sometimes......and I stress sometimes you'll get a grinding noise while turning in reverse when your CV joints are failing. Are you sure that a wire or something isn't touching the wheel?
Do the wheels fit on the hubs correctly? The factory wheels are machined to fit and center the wheels on the hub. Many aftermarket wheels are designed with a bolt pattern that fits on many cars, and you have to get hub-centric rings to make them center on the hubs correctly. I would look at this first.
Yeah hubs are good, when I initially put them on the adapter was loose and apparently the 1/2 block I drove like that threw something out of whack. I put my old fronts on and drove a mile or so, and the noise was gone. For fun I reinstalled the new fronts--->no noise. I guess the old wheels balanced everything out again or something. Anyways, thanks to all that helped, here's a pic of what I was I eventually accompished:
Cool looking ride, nice to see people making their Coopers unique and not letting the fact that it is not an "S" stop them.....
