Gas Tank Capacity & Mileage
Gas Tank Capacity & Mileage
Has anyone else noticed that the tank capacity on an '07 non-S seems to be about 14.5 gallons instead of ten and change as advertised? I've only got a couple of fill ups on the car, but they seem to consistently point to over 14 gallon capacity. This is a good thing IMO.
Also I noticed that the calculated MPG is higher than actual by 2-3 MPG. We are getting between 32 and 35 MPG mixed driving but the calculated average after resetting reads 35-37. This is probably a software update.

There were two threads on the gas tank capacity subject in the R56 area that were merged into one. It seems everyone is getting more than the 10.6 gallon capacity the manual states. I posted there that my MA told me that for some reason MINI is very vague about this topic, and that the R56 gas tank capacity is actually 13.8. I'm not sure how he knows this, but based on reading all the posts at the other thread, the MC definitely does not have only a 10.6 gallon capacity.

On a somewhat related note my first mileage reading for the car was 29.2 and that's mixed driving w/o the sport button on. My next reading came out to 29.5 w/ the sport button on and exhaust system added. I'm looking forward to taking a trip to Grand Rapids next month where I'll be able to see what the freeway mileage is like, I expect better than the 36 mpg its rated at though.
The most I've filled up with was 13.0 gallons. The fuel pie was on the last red slice and the display on the tach had brought up the low-fuel warning 3 times, with the OBC showing 30 miles 'til empty.
FWIW, a friend of mine that has an '02 R53 has had his OBC go beyond 0 miles until empty; it actually just flat-lines, LOL. His fuel gauge is off because at that point he only fills up with about 12 & 3/4 gallons. I wouldn't bet the system on the R56 is the same however.

2nd fillup I did 13.288, with 25 miles left on the obc. I want to drive it empty with a gas can to see if the obc is straight up or if there's more reserve...

I just put in 12.38 U.S. gallons in Romi. The trip computer said I had 64 miles left to travel and was at 30.1MPG.
So, 64/30.1 = 2.126 U.S. gallons + 12.38 U.S. gallons to fill = 14.4 U.S.gallons.
There were two candy corns left in the fuel gauge, and Romi was complaining about being low on fuel.
Last tank calculated to be 14.5 U.S. gallons as well. This all assumes the trip computer is actually doing the calculations correctly.

Just look at the MiniUsa.com web site. It says 13.2 gallons.
My range on a tank of gas is over 600 miles. http://www.miniusa.com/#/learn/FACTS...l_Efficiency-s

Ok, if the gas tank is 13.2 gallons, then the last two candy corns in the fuel gauge represent roughly 1 gallon of fuel. I happen to fill up almost immediately after getting the warning for low fuel and Romi took 12.1 gallons U.S. No topping off.
I am not saying that the last two candy corns cannot represent only 1 gallon of fuel, but why would they do that? It would be very odd.

13.2 is nominal capacity. It doesn't include an expansion area, the filler tube, a little bit of "extra" reserve.

There's a little bit of gas above and beyond that that's inaccessible-it would help at the end of the tank keep the fuel pump cooled(you don't want to totally run out too often-the pump motor won't take it). A couple of people have driven on "0" for a little ways and haven't actually ran totally out.

I have run a test on nine different fill-ups on my '06 MC; where I take the gallons I put in the tank and add to that the calculated gallons remaining, based on range and avg mpg. I average 14.3 gallons over those nine fill-ups as a total tank capacity. The highest capacity that I have calculated is 14.7 gals. (added 11.8 gals. with range of 102 miles/2.9 gals. remaining) and the lowest is 14.0 gals. (added 12.1 gal. with range of 69 miles/1.9 gallons remaining).
left.
On my way home from Atlanta after receiving a speeding ticket, I drove 300 miles at 70mph and got an astounding 42mpg! Wow, thats much better than the sticker of 36 hwy mpg. I then took a trip to Milwaukee with a stuffed Mini with 4 wheels/tires/jack/3 suit cases and a passenger and got 37 mpg.
