AIRBAG LIGHT WENT ON FOR 3 MINUTES

Howzit. My wife just told me that her 2006 Mini Cooper's (8400 mil) airbag light went on for roughly 3 minutes (Red Light on the big clock looking speedometer). She said that she starts the car and everything looks normal but the moment she drives off is when this pesky light comes on. Any thoughts?

Again, she said it only happened for a mere 3 minutes and approx 7 blocks of driving. TIA

I wouldn't mess with that - I'd consult your dealer. I have no direct experience, but I'd imagine there is a contact problem (wiring or connector) or a sensor problem. I wonder if faults such as this set a code in the ECM? (I don't know how 'networked' these cars might be...).

Good luck!

Regards,
Mark Gibson

i'm pretty sure that the only fault that the air bag system will sence and turn off the light on it's own for is for the fonrt seat belt buckle switches. the switches that tell the car the seat belt is buckled. all other faults in the system even if they are not currently present will keep the light on until the dealer corrects the problem and clears the fault

My airbag light came on as well and hasn't gone off in over a week. Anyone with a 2002 know if this is common? Hate to have to bring it to a dealer since my warranty ran out...

I JUST HAD MY 02 MCS IN TO MY LOCAL DEALER AND HAD IT FIXED UNDER WARRANTY. MINE STAYED ON CONSTANTLY AND THEY HAD TO REWIRE IT. IT WAS COVERED BECAUSE OF A BULLETIN THAT WAS ISSUED FOR THAT PROBLEM. THERE WAS NO CHARGE FOR THE COMOUTER HOOK UP AND THE REPAIR. MY DEALER EVEN GAVE ME A CAR TO DRIVEWHILE IT WAS THERE AND EVEN WASHED MINE FOR IT'S RETURN TO ME. HENDRICKS MINI ROCKS!!!

yeah if it is an 02 i am willing to put money that it is a high resistance fault for either the front left or right seat airbag or the belt tensioner. and yes this will be covered under warranty. Mini has extended the warranty coverage of the fault to 200,000 miles. and yes they replaced the connectors under the seat for the affected side for both the tensioner and the airbag regurdless if there is a fault for the tensioner or the air bag on the affected side

Cool I am going to call Prestige or Morristown to see what they say.

Mahalo for the input everybody. Its odd that for the past few days the light had gone back to normal. I did check the passenger and driver seats for lose connections - so far so good.

My '06 has the same problem. It corrected itself for a few days, but is back on. The overhead passenger air bag light stays on also. One day last week, a passenger got out and after the typical time, the seat belt warning came on, beep and light. The only way I could get it off was to fasten the passenger seatbelt.

I'm also in the MINI Air Bag Fault Club.

Mine came awhile back. I finally got the dealer Friday. They replaced some of the harness under the extended warranty. 24 hours later the light is back on. Perhaps the other side? I'll call for another visit.

Perhaps the fix is a black vinyl circle over the warning light? So far I've only heard of one air bag actually being replaced.
