Cheap plastic parts!

Hi Gang,

Is anyone other than me having problems with the plastic side pillar covers snapping off the sides of the windshield? I have lost two sets after windshield replacements and more recently lost the drivers side doing a buck-twenty on the front straight at VIR. What’s up with BMW's design?

You need to replace the clips when you do the pillers. We just did it on my partners MINI.
Also, we stock the clips and the pillers.

Thanks Scooby! What's the cost for a drivers side with clips from Fresno to NC?

After my last windsheild replacement, which no new clips were used, my pillar covers look like they will blow off.
When my currently cracked (damnit) windsheild is replaced, I'm demanding new clips throughout, and if the guy shows up without clips, then "come back when you do."

yea, I think someone just clicked in the wrong section..

I wouldn't call it common problem but I've seen it on a few r53s.

This thread moved to first generation Stock problems and Issues as I think it applies to the original post.

Don't these covers are also secured with screws that you have to undo from the doors side. I think you have to peel of the rubber door seals to uncover them.
Are these csrew get stiped when the covers fly of?

Yes, the A pillar covers are screwed into the A pillar under the door weather stripping.

I just had my windshield replaced and discovered that the windshield tech simply lifted the cover up and broke it off at the screws. He then stuck it back on with automotive double stick tape.

My advice to anyone getting a windshield replacement is to tell the tech about the screws under the weather stripping and then check afterward to see that it's reinstalled properly.

I had my '04 windshield replaced in the last 30 days and the tech said that they "lose" 50% of pillars when they pop them off to replace the glass. I lost both sides this weekend at Mid-Ohio. First time was at top end going into turn #7 and second time down the front straight. The rubber molding on the drivers side kept coming in the window opening and flying around in my field of vision. Came in and taped with racers tape. With both sides taped the car looked like crap but everyone knew I was coming up in their mirrors.
