extended maint. upgrade program

Hi folks
got this in my inbox today.
A few questions:

1) Does anyone have this?
2) Is it worth it? what does it cost?
3) are the prices they're quoting for brakes, 60k mile service, etc serious??? or are these prices for a BMW?
4) will it cover manuf. defects and replacement of things like the 4-yr 50k warranty does? what does it leave out? or is it just service?

thanks!

Dear Eric,

You may or may not have been informed of the *Extended Maintenance Upgrade
Program** that your vehicle qualifies for. The only prerequisite is that the
vehicle must be currently covered by an existing (not expired) 4 year /
50,000 mile maintenance program. The more miles you put on your vehicle and
the older that it gets, means cause for repairs. This is why Habberstad
BMW/Mini would like to offer you a chance to extend the service warranty that
you currently have.

This upgraded maintenance covers all factory recommended services. It
includes the replacement of the following items due to wear and tear: Brake
linings (pads) and rotors ($1,000-$1,200), external drive belts, wiper blade
inserts and any adjustments required due to normal operating conditions.

Not only is all this included, but your 60,000 mile service ($750-$850),
75,000 mile oil and filter change ($235-$400), and your 90,000 mile service
($400-$550) are all covered. That's a savings of at least $890 to $1,505-even
more when you consider that there's no sales tax!

If you bring in this letter when you stop by Habberstad BMW/Mini, we will
give you *10% OFF*! You can't beat this deal!

Don't delay! This offer ends February 28, 2007. If you have any questions
regarding the available plans or their cost, please contact a member of our
Service Team at xxx-xxx-xxxx.

Didn't know anything about it - would have probably done it had I known. Too late now.

I think those prices are probably serious - it's smart for them to offer this because MINI owners are probably less likely to keep having their cars serviced by the ridculously priced BMW/MINI dealerships.

It's just a maint. warranty, so I doubt other things will still be covered, like dash rattles and whatnot. I have no idea what it costs, but I'd spend 1,000$ on it.

Supposedly this is a 6year, 100k update. My chicagoland dealer, said this should be avail. near feb. 15. Covers everything that the factory warrenty did in the first 4 years.

Well, the dealer is kind of talking out of both sides of his mouth in the letter. In the first paragraph, he talks about the increased frequency of *repairs* as the car gets older/accumulates more miles, but the plan he's pitching doesn't cover repairs - it only covers scheduled maintenance. If you need a new transmission at 80,000 miles, this plan won't cover it.

In general, the extended service plans only have a chance of being worthwhile if you're committed to keeping the car through the extended service period AND you're committed to having the scheduled maintenance done at the BMW/MINI dealership even after the standard 3 year service agreement expires, with or without an extended service agreement.

You can have the scheduled maintenance done for significantly less money at an independent shop, or for a LOT less money if you do it yourself. Also, there's every chance that some of the higher-dollar items that the plan covers (like brake rotors) won't even come due during the extended period. I've owned many cars where the brake rotors were still within spec WELL past 100k miles.

I didn't see in your post how much they're asking for the extended service plan, but if there's any chance you'll be trading cars before the agreement expires, or if you're willing to seek out an independent shop or do the work yourself, you'd probably come out ahead by putting the money in some interest-bearing vehicle and just using the money as you need it in the future, instead of paying in advance for services you may or may not end up needing.

Can someone confirm whether this warranty covers repairs?

If it ONLY covers maintenance I'd never consider it....... but for $2000 if it covers anything that breaks, it would be worth looking into.

brakes and rotors

Bear in mind that when you replace brake pads on your Mini, you replace rotors, too--they can't be cut, and are actually designed to wear right along with the pads. Makes no sense to me! Does anyone know if aftermarket/performance rotors suffer the same wear? If you plan to keep the car for a reasonably long time, it might be cheaper to upgrade to performance hardware next time a brake job looms...?

ericscottf,

Did they tell you how much it costs? The dealer told me about this when I received my 2006 S this year. I didn't get it then, but know I have right up to the last day of my present warranty. Don't know what I'll do. It depends on the cost.

Comment about rotors: When the stock ones are worn below useful tolerances, I'll replace with better after market for far less money than OEM ones.

Worth the Dough

I upgraded the warranty when I bought my MINI and it paid for itself times 4. My MINI spent ALL day at the dealership and it cost me nothing!

How did it pay for itself? My car is at the dealer "all Day" when I get an oil change - 'cause they give me a loaner and I go to work.

Warranty Service

Well, I hired an independent mechanic to go over my MINI before it went off warranty because I didn't trust my dealer. Cost me $50. I wrote my dealer a business letter with 20 items that needed to be fixed. I happily sat in the dealership all day because they had to fix each and every item, and I kept tabs on their progress. After they fixed the stuff, the service manager handed me 6 pages of repairs, and didn't even speak to me because he knew I knew what had been going on.

Be advised that not all dealers are honest, and they make more money when you have something repaired off warranty. Also, it's not BMW policy to fix stuff they may find unless you bring it up, and this comes from a BMW employee I know. Also, Not all MINI dealerships have enough extra cars for each and every service customer. Buyer beware. Peace

Extended Maintence Upgrade Program

Hi...I'm brand new here tho I have been reading for weeks. I ordered my car from South Bay Mini. I spoke with the Finance Department 2 days ago to get info on their extended warranty. I will be giving the car to my daughter (if she EVER completes college). I don't want her to have to pay huge maintenance bills right out of college. They told me the cost is $750. for 4th year. I also asked about the 6 year 100K extended warranty. That is $1800. I plan to extend the maintenance for $750.00. What about the $1800.? Do you think that is negotiable? Fair price? I expect to have it in the family for approximately 6 years.

Warranty Extension

I extended the basic warranty to 50K for $300, and it covered a very expensive brake servicing. BTW, a lot of expensive servicing is due about 60K, would that be covered by the warranty? I have some doubts. Good luck!

Assuming you meant you extended the maintenance agreement to four years, 50,000 miles for $300? How long ago was this. I'll be picking up my cabrio in March and want to know how much negotiation room there is on this price. I have heard everything from $399 to $750 for an extra year, so your price, if recent, is a bargain.

As for an extended warranty (warranty for 6 years 100K miles, not the maintenance agreement), $1800 sounds better than some I have been reading on these boards, although still sounds way excessive. Has anyone gotten this from the dealer for less? Does this fee typically change for a cabrio vs an S vs a hardtop Cooper?

I just extended My maintenance for another year back in February. This was a great deal at $600 because My '04 MCS is comming up on Inspection 1 and will probably be in for a brake job within the next 4 to 5 months. Service advisor told me the brake job is normally $1100!!!
