Does anyone have a clue as to how to replace the belt without purchasing the tool to back off tension from the automatic belt tensioner?
Just replaced my alternator* and now I cannot slip the belt back on.

*please note that, at this time, auto parts stores (at least in my area of the country) cannot test a MINI alternator "out of the car"...

 

there is some screwdriver method i remember reading about. i should probably find it as my belt needs to be replaced pretty soon

 

buy the tool

 

put a 16mm socket on the large front pivot bolt. then use a large pry bar against a 6mm pin inserted in one of the small holes in thetensioner side near spring. pry on bar and insert a drift or leather awl or small screw driver (you get the idea) into the lower hole of the spring steel that comes up as it presents itself. this will hold the tensioner while youwap the belt. look for diy bye randy webb top of mod page . it may be there.

 

I contacted Webb Motorsports and Randy was kind enough to send me a copy of his "how to" step-by-step guide to install a SC pulley (Thanks RANDY!) but looking through it and what was involved I threw in the towel and had my car towed 50-miles to my mechanic.
Car is back home and I'm a happy camper.

man just do it once. you'll see it's not bad . after a while you'll have it down to an hour or less .

 

It is a pain but doable... I replaced my super charger pulley and belt which took about three hours (little extra work). However, you will need the belt detensioner tool or a home solution.
