Bell tone at 37 degrees?

I've got an '02 MCS. Whenever the temperature on the computer display reaches 37 degrees fahrenheit, whether going up or down, it makes a bell tone. Does anybody know why it does this and if there is a way to reset it or turn it off?

37 degrees is the temperature at which water starts to freeze and so BMW gave us a feature to warn us of this. All BMW's such as say the 530i, have this feature too. Not sure if the dealer can disable this feature but I know that you as the owner cannot do it yourself. Check with your dealer.

I finally heard the "black ice" ding three times in one day as I drove from Flagstaff, AZ to Gallup, NM in early April this year. Gotta love the heated seats!

I drove the car for two years and never heard it once, until the moment I drove it off its tropical island. First thing I noticed was a LOT better drivability and more power with the lower temperatures, especially since the A/C no longer needed to be running all of the time. But then everything started squeaking and rattling from the cold! That was the first time I really understood the complaints on NAM about poor ride and rattles...

Sure you can believe that it's about black ice... but me, I choose to believe that it's an homage to the #37 Mini that won the Monte Carlo in 1964.

Whenever you hear it, throw your arms into the air and cheer "37!"

That's what I do.

(Takes my mind off the fact that I'm freezing my *ss off!!!)

My Audi A4 did it too...+ it put a snowflake up on the display....I still like it...since the body is cold...the ding wakes me up until the bunn warmers come up to speed! (Gee, as if I was not aware it was cold!)

Like the rain Sensor windshield...as if I was un aware it was raining!

cold signal

Well the other morning driving to work in Henderson, Nv. it was 31F and I heard the "bell". I figured the car was giving me a signal it was below freezing. I already knew this, BUT I LOVE MY USED NEW TO ME MINI,
So I just figured great engineering is being shown to me again by this sweet car!!!

Interesting that you should mention that because a few days ago I got into my car and it said 32. I knew the forcast low for the day was 60! I saw it quickly make it's way past 37 degrees (for which I got the ice ding) and up to 65. Weird...

I finally got my Mini up here two days ago, and it has constantly been below 37*. The only ding I can recall hearing is the seatbelt reminder.

Does it make the ding only when the temp drops below 37* (assuming the temp at initial startup was higher than 37*?)

Mine dings and flashes the temp when first started if it is 37º or less. Might not notice it if the seatbelt is unfastened (or low fuel level triggers) when the car is started (you'd think they could use different sounds, but then they did only give us one turn signal indicator as well...).

I'll have to buckle up before starting up the car tomorrow morning. I know that the display blinks, maybe I couldn't hear the temperature ding because the dinger was busy trying to tell me to put my seatbelt on.
