How do you know if bypass valve is working?
i would look at the circumstances before you look for borken parts.
what gear were you in and what speed were you going? its all dependant.
A stock Cooper could walk your JCW if you were in 5th at 2 grand doing 40 and the Cooper was in 2nd at 5 grand doing 40, and you both floor it.

If you're generating boost...
it's working, to some extent... Typically, the symptoms of a bad valve are that you don't make boost, and if severe, you get codes, maybe even limp home mode..... And that's when you floor it. At idle and light throttle, it runs fine....
If the stop limit isn't set right, then you just don't make maximum boost....
