I've read all the post here regarding a search for a shallow (enough) 36 mm socket for the oil filter can. I've also searched the web, and just find the usual stuff.

But this month's how-to features a perfect tool. Who makes it? Where can I get one?

BTW, I'm looking for this particular socket. I already have a Craftsman 36mm socket.

Thanks.

That's a Hazet socket. After Googling I found this place that sells them.

The part # on their page is HZ 2169-36 and it goes for $27.69.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

I found a Husky brand shallow 36mm at Home Depot in my area. Price was under $7.00. Works fine with my 1/2 drive ratchet. I'd be afraid that there would be too little space for a socket, 3/8 to 1/2 adapter and ratchet between the filter and the firewall though.

The Craftsman does work, with this limitation: you can only loosen the canister about one full turn before you run out of room to remove the socket. From that point, it's loose enough to remove by hand. Obviously this has something to do with the height of your ratchet head as well, but this is what happens with mine.

I checked out the Stanley set at WalMart, and for the money, this is the way to go. The set cost $12.97 and includes the 36mm as well as 32, 30, 28, and 27mm sizes. The 36mm is 2" in length. I tried it with every 1/2" drive ratchet I own, including a Craftsman torque wrench, and the clearence to the firewall ranged from 1/4" to 1/2" - more than enough to get the job done.

BTW, these ARE flank drive sockets. This was a bargain. Thanks for the tip.
