02 Cooper trans woes/cheapest dealer

My 02 Cooper's 5spd transmission took a dump, out of warranty of course. I'm looking for some advice.

I am not interested in paying the inflated dealer cost of installing a new transmission, so I will be paying a local shop to do the work.

I'm interested in buying the parts myself and besides calling around to the local dealerships, can anyone recommend a dealer with exceptional pricing?

Does anyone have knowledge regarding swapping the newer style Getrag transmission into an older car that came with the Midland? How about swapping the 6spd Cooper S Getrag box into the Cooper?

Thanks for any suggestions or pointers here. I'm trying to make this expensive repair as painless as possible.

Keith

What exactly happened to your old transmission? What kind of dump did it take?

I found a used transmission for my wife's Subaru through www.car-part.com which is a search engine for wrecking yards. Put in your car info, what part you're looking for and where you are and it searches a whole bunch of junkyards for you. Most places will ship, then you just have to find a local place that won't rape and pillage you on the install.

What kind of dump? A tremendous whine, goes away when clutch depressed, comes back when released. Noise is louder and higher pitched the faster the car is driven. Does not change pitch when gears are changed.

Drained the trans fluid, and found excessive metal on the fill and drain magnetic plugs.

Sounds like it may be the input shaft bearing checking out. I've seen the same symptoms on other front wheel drive cars that turned out to be a bad input shaft bearing.

Same thing happened with my 03. First, I was told it was my throw-out bearing. Replaced that and still had the noise. Finally decided that it was likely my synchros and had to have the tranny replaced, like you, out of warranty. Sucks to have a Midland tranny, don't it? It got replaced by the dealership with.....wait for it....another Midland tranny!
