Question for 2006 CooperS owners

I usually drive with my radio on. Today it was off and I noticed a whistling sound. I thought it was coming from my windows but when I checked they were all the way up. I made my bf listen and he says it's because my car has a super charged engine. The noise is faint like it's from a distance but I can still hear it. Have any other 2006 Cooper S owners have this problem? Thanks in advance.

Could be the sc or the fan blowing air through the air ducts.

Good reason to drive with your radio on.

I drive with mine off once in awhile but don't recall hearing any faint whine. I hear the supercharger better, but I hear it also with the radio on. Could just be wind.

Yeah, even with the fan on 1, I can hear it. (it's a pretty loud fan)

I've read where others (Gromit) have complained about a whistling noise at high speeds (100 mph), but I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about.

I heard it while I was idling and with all fan/ac components off. Windows were up as well. It's hard to describe but it sounded like a very, very faint teapot whistling, generally toward the center console area. It didn't seem like it was normally coming from the supercharger, but I guess I can't speak from much experience(first s/c car owned for less than 5 months). Well, hopefully it's nothing but I'll try and keep you guys posted. If anyone has any other suggestions, be my guest......

Hmm? I had whistle coming from my right air vent at around 70 mph on a cold windy day last week. Does the intensity vary if you move your steering wheel? The power steering pump makes a kind of a whiny/whistle sound too!

I get a whistle from what appears to be the rear hatch starting at about 70mph and above. I figured the hatch was being pulled away from the car and some air was 'yapping' at me through a small gap.

I have very similar symptoms on my '04 MCS. On my car, it's the following:

With the air on recirculate, at speeds over 90 MPH, whether the fan was on or off, the whistling would appear. Put the air on fresh, and it went away.

I figured out that when I put it on recirculate, the air ducts weren't closed off entirely, and at high speeds, the air rushing through would logjam (so to speak) at the not-quite-closed vents, and that caused the whistling.

It persists to this day.

you aren't crazy! I've heard this too, at idle. As well as an occasional bout of high pitch rattle-whine, almost like a noisy fan belt, but flatter. Hard to reproduce, and therefore hard to troubleshoot...

One thought that may be completely off. If there is a timing chain and not a timing belt on our engine then you may be hearing the timing chain. I can't remember which timing system we have. I know my Accord has a timing chain and I can hear it when ever the engine runs.

Fuel pump whine possibly.

I was hearing a similar kind of whine. When I depressed the clutch it went away. I took the car in yesterday and was told that I need a new flywheel and that the oil in the differential was not correct. They were going to replace the oil with the correct oil and check again. See my post from yesterday on Warranty Repairs on 06 MCS JCW

I was told that the whine was due to the incorrect oil (its what the car came with) in the Limited Slip Differential.

Have you tried rolling up the windows? hehehehehe

Seriously, did you ever get it fixed? Or are you just living with it?

It only comes in at triple digits on the speedo, and even then, not always. I feel sure it is something to do with the molding around the windshield. Someday I'll get off my lazy butt, and get a little clear silicone up in there.

See if this TSB makes any sense regarding the noise? This may or may not be what everyone is talking about.
