Extreme MPG

Here is a picture of my mini's range in miles after I filled up with gas and drove 1 mile home. As you can see, it is insanely high at 573 miles. My digital camera sucks, but that is its real range. When I filled the car up, I added 13.449 gallons of fuel. I know that 13.449 gal is over the capacity of the tank but I had just drove 20+ miles with the range reading three dashes, I think the mini can run off the unburned fuel emissions of other cars. For those of you who are not math wizes, the potential gas mileage here is over 42.6 MPG.

Just a side note, to attain such crazy MPG, you must drive at 25-30mph in 6th gear, keeping the engine under 1500rpm, coasting down hills, using very slight throttle, and ocasionally turning the car off at stoplights.

This may all sound silly but I just wanted to see how good I could get the range/MPG. I forgot to reset the system (battery disconnect/reconnect) so the cons. MPG still reads 28.

If I'm reading this right, you can reset the functions on your OBC (computer) by holding down the button that toggles through each function. Scroll to your 'cons. MPG' amd hold it down for 2 or 3 seconds.

Are you driving an "s"? In my MCC, i routinely see low 600s.
yes, you are, you have a 6th gear. nevermind!
You can indeed reset the avg readout by pressing and holding the button when you are in avg mpg mode.

It's nice to see someone else is getting good mileage on an S. I've gotten in the upper 30's on several occasions. One thing I worry about is such low revs in 6th gear. The MCS seems to be very unhappy below 2k in the upper gears. It might be putting extra stress on some components as it's meant to be more of a high-winding engine. We also have a Honda Insight where 1k rpm in 5th gear at 30 mph is just fine and depending on A/C, gets you well north of 100 mpg.

I could get 42 mpg on the turnpike in my CVT MC, but you are the first to hit that on an MCS. As a new MCS owner, you have given me a reason to live again

Getting decent milage with my 04 S

I have an 04 S coupe 6 speed. IF I CAN KEEP MY FOOT OUT OF IT and just drive normally, I can get about 25 city and about 30 hwy. I use only Chevron 91 octane and have a 15% pulley and Milltech catback...

Now when I added the 15% pulley, my mileage dropped to about 21...BECAUSE I HAD MY FOOT GLUED TO THE PEDAL!

Now That I am "over" it, things are quite decent! I always laugh when going down a steep hill on the hwy and the puter reads 99!

I would think that such low rmps are slightly better for the car than running to redline all the time. As I said, in this experiment I used very slight throttle, the engine never bogged down.

Are you insinuating that I need a new hobby? heh heh. My car is my hobby, what with my mods and all. This was just the latest in a long series of MPG experiments I have ran over my 4 year history with this car.

Well, I always set the meter and figure out MPG, because I figure a change tells me something is wrong with my MINI.

Does anyone know how big the MINI gas tank actually is? I know its bad, but I many times have run the tank down to 0 miles, sometimes even further. You get the 3 little dashes (- - -) and you better get to a gas station. I've actually got it till the last dash. My fill up after that was like 14.3 gallons if I remember correctly...maybe higher. Anyone know??

I rarely see my range get much over 300 miles on a full tank. I'm still deciding whether or not thats a good or bad thing....

I do my MPG test in the hours of 3am to 5am, when no one is on the road. For the last 15 miles of my journey the range read (- - -), so who's to say what it means...

I could match these great results if I could find a 500 mile downhill stretch.

30 mph in 6th gear? Hmm. I'm usually only in 2nd.

I thought about 40-45 mph was a good gas economic speed.
