Clicking Sound When Breaking...

I seem to have a clicking sound coming from the rear of the car under sight
braking pressure. If I were to guess it might be a brake line hitting something,
Steve of Steve's Auto clinic drove it, checked the calipers and found nothing,
as soon as I drove off it was back...any thoughts?

i have had a couple of cars with the same noise, have you had your brakes replaced?

if you did and you used aftermarket pads, it will probably be the pads shifting and smacking the calipers.

good luck!

Ours does the same thing (2000 miles). But it only seems to do it after you back up, apply the brakes and then move forward and apply the brakes.

Our Miata does the same thing and it's caused by the sway bar end links rotating and taping their housing. I haven't hadn't a chance to look at our Mini and see if its the same thing. But again, ours doesn't do it everytime we apply the brakes, so I'm not that concerned about it......yet.

I have this same problem/concern. Everything works fine but the click is creepy. It almost sounds like a piece of suspension or a loose bolt to something clicking in and then out of place... weird though for sure. I think it might be the stock calipers shifting. Any possible tightening there? Let me know how this fixes tom.
thanks

That's it exactly, usually under light brake pressure, and not all the time.

like I said the mechanic checked the the brakes / drove it and found nothing wrong, but it persists

Check to make sure that all of your lug bolts (or nuts if you have a stud conversion) are tight. 90lbs-ft.

i know you said somebody checked the brakes, but still i'll double check about the pads. i wasted about 1 1/2 on a customers car with the same complaint as yours. i checked the brakes, suspension, lines, lugs and everything else that could make such a noise and came up with nothing.

i then drove the car with another guy and after anger came over me i kicked the right rear tire and heard the noise. i kicked it again and sure enough the noise was there... i reached in and literraly moved the pads about 3mm up/down. that was it.

i tried to duplicate the problem for the customer and it didn't click.
after she walked back to the waiting area i tried to move the pads and they moved and clicked(of course when she's not there)...

so they may look ok, like i tought but i would still check/move them. also try putting some thick grease on the pads/brackets and see if it goes away.

good luck!

yeah it's not my brake pads, because it happens when I don't apply the brakes at all. So i dunno...

I have a 2005 MINI Cooper S, with all the mods listed on the bottom, plus JCW Suspension and JCW Brake kit

Thanks Joey!!

Everyone Else: If that's really the problem, i wouldn't worry about it. But if you decide to apply some grease, be careful where you apply it. Make sure you use high-temp grease. NAPA sells little packets of "High-Temp Brake Grease" that works well.

You just don't want your brakes to heat up and then have the grease liquify and run into the brake pads.

the grease would go on the bracket that holds the pads, where the pads make contact with the bracket. that way there's not metal to metal contact.
Mini's does not apply grease to the bracket from the factory(i don't know why).

And when i found out that it was the pads, the car was parked and i just happen to get so frustrated that i kicked the tire and that's when i heard it.

good luck!

There are numerous 2005 MCS models that came with a clutch/flywheel problem from factory. Check with your SA, it's fixed & replaced under warranty. Do a search in the Performance Mods/Drivetrain forums and you'll find some info. I would imagine it's also around here in the Beneath the Bonnet forum but I haven't looked.

Good Luck

Me 2

My fiancee's 2006 Mini (350 miles) does the same. I'll have to double check but I recall it happening after reversing.

I've heard the same clicking sound while braking my 2006 MCS. It's intermittent. Just took delivery Saturday. I'll watch it this week and take it in if it's persistent.

I've got that same similar noise with my 06. Figured it was one of those features with the car.

Starting noticing it after my first hard braking. More noticable with backing up in reverse and then applying the brake. I made sure all of the lugs were torque to the correct specifications in the manual.

I plan on replacing the rear sway bar as it has been on the list of wanted mods this winter. Maybe this might solve the problem. The pads being a little loose sounds logical but not too worried about it.

I read somewhere that it's normal. There is some kind of brake system checking. It usually happens when starting driving or backing up. I have my second MINI now and it makes the clicking sound.
