Busted Motor Mount

Busted Motor Mount
So, after 6 months I take BOB in for his first service: boy I've had fun putting 10K+ on the car Upon picking up my baby my service advisor says do you know that you have a broken engine mount What Well, we open the hood and look in on left side and I say I don't see anything broken... she points to some dark coloured runs of liquid that are coursing down the frame-rail toward the back of the engine. She says see that? That's fluid from the damper in your engine mount Oh that's just great I didn't notice it as I have the BRG coloured car and the fluid is clear enough to blend well. The part got ordered and it's getting fixed today. No apparent issues with driving or anything. The dealer is also going to do an engine comparment wash as well. All under warranty
So any of you hard-drivin' souls that have dark coloured paint jobs (or not) take a look under your hood for a dark tar-like substance dripping down near your engine mounts on to your frame-rails. The service advisor tells me this engine mount problem is more common than they like to let on. Just thought I would mention it to the group.
Still happily motoring
Cheers all

Yep, just been there and done that. I noticed my mount was bad by the sound and started looking for the fluid and didn't see anything. Turns out mine was just starting to leak and the Tech said I wouldn't have noticed the fluid..as it was to early on. I'm surprised you didn't notice a sound with it. But, yep it's common.... So i just ordered a engine damper as well--this should help the engine to be more stabilized...we'll see how that helps

Haven't had any troubles with motor mount, but after reading this thread...I'll check once a week for any signs. Without NAM members telling stories like this one, I think I would be a babe in the woods concerning my MiNi. I'm not exactly a engine specialist and it helps to read these things.

The dealership should repair it under warranty. I guess not all dealership are alike when it comes to warranty issues.

SAAKEY:
Nope... didn't notice any different sound. Just noticed the spooge after the service advisor pointed it out.
PAULIEKEYS:
Sorry to hear about that! But, how did hydralic fluid spew all over the engine well? Or was that the fluid from the engine mount?
LEXSTER05:
Really? The dealership didn't clean anything? Everything was done under warranty for me... even the the engine-well wash... granted they took it down to primer in places
Anyway, the mount is all fixed now, the spooge is cleaned away, and I didn't have to pay a cent. I think if this motormount thing is a problem then I'll be looking into getting a damper as well.

When I posted my Thread asking if anyone else had the same problem as I did I got ZERO response from anyone. I'm sorry it happend to you but it's important to document others having the same problem because for me the "Factory Rep" took a quick glance and decieded that it could not have come from the motor mount because there was not enough fluid to make it to the back of the car. Most post I have read talked of a slow leak and posted pictures of the fluid leaking out, well mine seems to have just let go and as a result it dumped it's load all at once. I think it happen on the road at cruizing speed (70 or so) and as we all know our back ends collect everything. I didn't wash my car until the day after my weekend drive and by then it was to late. It would not come off. Brown specks are all down the passanger side as well as the boot and I mean ALL over. Also stained the rim of my front wheel at each spoke. I took my car back to the dealer yesterday for an appointment with the second Factor Rep. They called me back in the afternoon to tell me that he called and would not be coming until next Monday and that I should come back and pick up my car ontil then. NOT GONNA DO IT. My car will stay there until it's looked at. There is more to this story as far as what the dealership is offering but I will wait until I have found out the end result with the Factory rep.

Took my MINI in Monday for this exact problem. MINI of Mtn View did a spectacular job! They replaced the bad mount and steam cleaned the engine bay at no cost to me. My service advisor even sent it back for a 2nd engine cleaning because she didn't think it was good enough - Jennifer ROCKS!

Replaced mine on Monday (just over 11K miles). It had been making noise for a week or two, but no fluid was leaking. On the work order, the technician wrote that he had "found the mount collapsed".
I guess I was just lucky that the mount failed without any visible damage to the engine bay.

I believe there have been a couple of other threads on this. The one with the most info I could find is this one:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...tor+Mount+leak
It is apparently a very common problem on 05's that most people don't notice unless shown specifically. Except obviously for pauliekeys's case, which seems to be an extreme case of the same problem.
Here's mine, BTW w/ 12k miles (noticed it at about 10k):

From hearing pauliekey's experience I'll probably make an appointment in the next couple of days...

From what I have read on NAM, most people have a slow leak and it drips slowly in the inside of the engine bay and eazy to catch. It would seem that mine let go all at once giving me no warning and even thought I found the damage a day after it had happend, by that time the damage was done. It was in the paint and no clay bar or wax cleaner would remove it. This stuff goes right into the clear coat and paint.

I had the same thing happen to my 04 MCS - dealer replaced it under warranty but initially claimed that my reduction pulley caused the problem.
So I just strolled over to their customer computer and went to mini2.com and showed him a whole slew of people who have had the same problem that don't have any mods.
The engine damper will help alleviate the problem by reducing the stress on the stock motor mount. And just to be clear an aftermarket engine damper is not meant to be a replacement motor mount - more of a little "helper" motor mount.

Same problem about a month ago with my '06 MCS, about 5000 miles. The sound is what gave it away. Being a new Mini owner at the time, I really didn't have a clue what the problem was. The "noise" was driving me buggy; I couldn't figure out how to explain it to the tech.
In any case, they identified the problem right away and fixed it same day. In fact, at the time I thought he was giving me a line! But I then checked out NAM and found that this is a pretty common problem.
I didn't see any fluid, but this thread reminds me to go take a second look.
