Help replacing window motors/regulators

Both of my windows on my '03 Cooper S have now stopped working. Does anyone have a procedure for first diagnosing the problem to the motors and if it is the motors or regulator, replacing them? If there are any special tools, I'd also like to know where I can buy them, the dealer refuses to sell my any tools.

Thanks in advance,

David in Miami Florida

just had my driver's side motor replaced @ the dealer under warranty. how many miles do you have? it will be covered under warranty if you're still under the 4 year/50,000 mile bumper to bumper plan.

Diag- If they do not work with the toggle switch beat just below the door handle and use the toggle switch. If it breaks free, the window motor is intermittent and needs to be replaced. The only special tool you would need is to remove the window but you could use a flat head screw driver CAREFULLY (do not break the glass!) to turn the locks. If you removed the outside lower molding by the window(lifts ups easly) and look down, you can see the two locks holding the window secure.

After reading the "thumping technique" here on the forum, I went outside and tried it - it worked! So the good news is the windows are working. The bad news is that I'll need to replace the motors anyway down the road.

Thanks for the advice on replacing the motors, I'll gather up the nerve now and give it a shot.

Thanks again,

36,000 mile maintenance warranty but this is covered under the 50,000 general warranty as it is broken not a wear item.

I'd go soon if I were you. <G> And get them to do both.
