Trunk rattle/creaking: Solved
My trunk has been making a creaking sound lately that has driven me nuts. You can verify by tugging on the trunk from the inside with the rear seats down.
I removed the two rubber bump stops on the boot--they simply unscrew. I then pried up the two nut covers by the latch (on the car--not on the boot) and using a 10mm socket, loosened the two nuts. The latch now moves freely for and aft, left and right. I moved the latch all the way IN (so that the trunk would close more tightly when latched) and gently snugged down the two bolts. Close the boot and check for fit inside and out. Make sure that the U of the boot is centered in the latch--the fit left to right--and that on the outside the boot doesn't stick out, nor is recessed vs. the body--the fit fore and aft. Be gentle when shutting the boot at this point as the bump stops are missing, and if the latch were too far out of alignment you may damage something.
Once satisfied I finished tightening the two bolts, and replaced the two bump stops (I screwed them in until about three lines were showing.)
The boot fits perfectly, and the creaking sound is absolutely gone.
A.R. Test notes. 1.) Put masking tape down when prying up the bolt covers to avoid gouging the plastic. 2.) Note how many lines are showing before removing the bump stops in case you wanted them exactly as before.
HTH,
Jeff

THEY NOW HAVE A NEW REAR HATCH STRIKER THAT TAKES CARE OF THAT PROBLEM.
YOUR DEALER CAN INSTALL IT FOR YOU AND IT TAKES ABOUT 15 MIN. THEY WILL ADJUST YOUR HATCH AT THE SAME TIME.
ALL COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

I would've taken it in and let them do it, but it's about 30 miles each way to the dealer, and requires setting up an appointment. I posted for those in my situation--where taking 10-15 minutes and doing it yourself saves hours.
